A colleague has given me her Asus EEE PC 1001P netbook. There is an error message coming up every few seconds that says the ACPI service has encountered a problem and needs to close. I've done some googling and have found suggestions to replace the Chipset and audio drivers. I've done both to no effect.

I'm in the Device Manager now looking at the entry for Computer under which is "ACPI Multiprocessor PC".

My question is the 1001P running a multiprocessor? It has an Intel Atom N450 which is a single core, multi-threaded CPU according to this link.

What I'm wondering is that considering a student is allowed to use this netbook on a regular basis has he changed the ACPI settings somehow?

Could be gav, could be. I wasn't 100% sure so I thought I'd ask. Any ideas on the problem itself? I've given the netbook back to the teacher concerned to stop the moaning. I've told her to drag the message window down so that the top of the box is just above the very bottom of the screen so it is out of the way at the very least until I can work this one out.

I'm trying to remember what the ACPI program does on our old Eee PCs (we don't have any any longer, so I can't check), but I think it was to enable the display to switch between 2 resolutions - the native 1024×600, and a larger resolution for programs which wouldn't work at 600 vertical pixels.

If that's all it is and she doesn't use that feature, try just disabling it (it was in the system tray on ours). If there's no ill-effects, disable it permanently or uninstall it.

On ours, the display wasn't dependant on the ACPI service at all - it just provided additional functionality for the Intel driver.

OK, well that sounds promising that we can try to disable it.

I did have a look in msconfig but I couldn't see anything that was obviously ACPI related so I decided to leave it so I didn't disable anything essential by mistake. I did check the Services on Friday and there was nothing in there so there must be something somewhere calling a program or file up that is causing this error.

What OS are you running?

I think gav hit the nail on the head, you used to have to find a certain version of the Asus onscreen/fn key software - otherwise you'd get this problem, particularly on Win 7 in the early days.

There used to be a lot of threads on eeeuser.com, but seems to be down/dead now :(

I can't install the driver on another system, obviously, but looking at the .msi installer for our Eee PC 701s, there are two .exe files. asacpisvr.exe and astray.exe.

Windows XP. I'll have another look tonight when I get home.

First one looks familiar. :)
