ASUS EEE 901: ETA?

1000 with SSD & Linux for me...... 10" goodness. With money i'm getting from the tax man i dont mind the little extra cost. Got a few spare XP discs lying about as well for dual boot fun.

wonder if there are any touch-panel mods for the 10"?

Seems a little silly to get anything over the 901 personally, as surely you're moving into regular notebook site then?

Lets be honest, OOo is great, but its not as not good as MSoffice yet.

Like I said, depends on what you want to do with it.

I've yet to find anything I can do in Word that I can't do in OOo.

But then I'm definitely what you'd call a "light" user of Word.

It's not even worth my time and risk in pirating it (as I did in my student days), it's easier and more legal to use OOo and get all the functionality I'll ever need.

I need MS office as my firm uses it for all the e-paperwork so I need it to be compatible.

The current release of OpenOffice had most of Word 2007's features before Word 2007 did. What exactly is it you need to do?

I've set up over 400 PCs this year, and I've saved my customers over £60,000 by not installing MS Office on any of them. There is usually huge resistance to OpenOffice as there is a certain snobbery about why they are being given 'freeware'. After one week of being 'forced' to use OpenOffice, the users are given an identical machine with Office 2007 on it to try out. The first thing they comment on is how slow it is to load, then how cluttered it is, then they can't find anything. Users almost always prefer OpenOffice once they are given the opportunity to try it out.

Hi guys I was just wondering how versatile these little babies are as I am thinking of investing in one for work but I use MS office (Excel ,word Etc) no graphic progams just spread sheat one , so will they run them or is the spec to low.

Seeing as no one else is answering your question I'll give it a go ;)

I'm currently running an Intel Celeron 2Ghz with 1GB of ram on a 7200rpm 100GB HD. Apart from the processor there isn't much different, other than the fact that the Atom is a newer processor. With that in mind I am currently running Firefox, mIRC, MSN, Excel, Putty, an FTP client, Foobar, 2 monitors, a firewall, an anti virus, and a couple other bits of software in the background...

I'm pretty sure you'd be fine running MS Office on the EEE as long as you don't overload it with background processes :)

its the keyboard that does it for me.

I've got a kickass comp, so i dont need a powerhouse of a lappy, and i dont want to pay super £££ for a little sony or whatever, so that means a netbook.

9" would be great, but the 10" has a better keyboard, so if i'm typing lots of stuff that'll save me much RSI, and i prob will, back to uni in Sept for teacher training. A Mini-Note might be an option, but sucky bat life and poor performance are a negative. The Wind again looses in bat life.

eepc 901 and 1000, as most of you will probably already know, are available for pre-order on a competitor site which lists a 2-7 day wait for stock, although it then says stock is due towards the end of July.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for one of these now, probably the 1000 for the extra HDD space, I'm also going for XP as I currently run Vista and want it to be as easy as possible to keep it in sync with my PC.

Before I rush in and pre-order however, I have a few reservations/questions...

1. Is the RAM upgradable? - I'd quite like 2gb if it's possible, although this is minor.

2. Battery Life - Is there any 'real world' idea off the battery life, again, this isn't too big of an issue, i'm guessing with the atom efficiency will be improved, and as has been mentioned somewhere else, forward planning isnt too difficult.

3. 903/4/5.... - Is there any idea when these will be released, and will this see a big price drop in the 1000, I'm not too bothered if waiting a month will save me about £30, tbh i'd rather have 4 weeks of laptop!

4. and this is the big one, how easy will it be to sync with vista? - If anyone has any idea about this your help would be much appreciated, i'm hoping i can somehow sync 'my documents' or something similar when the laptop is connected, i've had a look at sync. centre on vista, but with nothing to sync i dont have much of an idea how this works, or what exactly it is capable of. A 3rd party program wouldnt be a problem, giving i had budgeted about £700 for a laptop before deciding on the eepc. again, slightly off topic but any help would be much appreciated!!
