I had a play with a 1.6 atom based eeepc the other day, it had 16gb SSD and 1gb ram...
Linux ran fine, but XP, my god... really struggled. It was fine when running as long as you didn't do more than one thing at a time, but forget multitasking. (you had to wait for SSD to stop doing stuff before clicking anything or risk dreaded 'not responding' windows)
The XP install and windows updates took a whole day....
If you want to go XP (or Vista) route on a netbook make sure it has a proper mechanical drive, at least until these SSD perform better in write performance.
edit: it was usable, but no fun at all to use... I know from experience a 1.6 atom, 2gb ram and a proper hard drive will run Vista fine and fast. I know many will say whats the point of Vista on a netbook, but I find it's bluetooth networking much more reliable, and also it's just nicer to use
Page files are considered to shorten the life of SSD's but shouldn't have a detrimental effect on the performance.
Sounds like a dodgy install to me as my 701 runs at 630Mhz and I can play City of Heroes on it!
