My board is a Asus X570 Formula VIII im running BIOS 1001

I have a Nvidia 2070 Super

When i go into the BIOS under Advanced>OnBoard Device configuration PCIEX16_2 bandwidth shows as X8 Mode (the other option is Auto)

Under Tool > Graphics Card information > GPU Post

It shows Slot : PCIEX16_2 as "Running at x8 Native" - it also says "install the GPU in PCIEX16_1 or PCIEX16_2"

my GPU is installed in slot 2 (PCIEX16_2)

Both Slot 1 & slot 2 i presume can support x16, hence their naming PCIEX16!

Why is my GPU only running at x8, its directly plugged into the motherboard.

They will call it Slot PCIEX16 as that refers to the physical size of the slot. It does not necessarily mean the slot is actually wired to provide x16 bandwidth. In fact usually with a majority of the boards they expect you to use the top slot for a single GPU hence that will be the only slot wired for a full x 16 bandwidth. The next x16 slot down is usually only wired for x8 bandwidth. The rationale for this is the CPU only has x16 lanes (or x20 in AMD but x4 going to M.2 anyways) so from MoBo's manufacture perspective, you will already use x8 lanes for top GPU, so by default not enough lanes for the second slot to have x16 bandwidth, so just wire the next lane down to x8 bandwidth wise, no point doing the full x16 plumbing. This is not new and has happened on both mainstream Intel and AMD for a while. (some exceptions apply of course). The bottom slot as a note on these boards is even wired for less! while it is also physically a x16 slot, bandwidth wise its usually at x4 lanes and usually lanes come from chipset and not the CPU.

You can check page 1-8 of your manual, no shows second x16 slot as x8 bandwidth wise.

You can also take a look at actual pictures of the board and see visually, the PCIe pinout stop half way up the PCIe slot

Thank you, this helped me clarify why the soldering on the back of the x570-e and chviii had lower amount of solder on the second and third pciexpress x16 vs the first slot.
