noticed tonight my asus gtx480 reaching 87c which is not that hot for a gtx480 , while playing dirt3 it started stuttering and pausing until i turned the fan speed up . why is this cause it has stumped me lol , one thing to note though i had the heating on cause i had bathed the dog :D

87c is fine. Is it overclocked? What's the case airflow like? Try giving at blast of furmark to see if it artifacts when it gets hot. My overclocked GTX 470 reaches about the same temperature.

furmark crashes when it reaches 87c , noticed the volts never go above 0.975 underload . i thought the volts on the gpu would be higher ? , case airflow seems ok as my cpu @3.8ghz never goes over 45c with the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro cooler . but it only reaches that temp when usinf prime95 or occt

Shouldn't be crashing at 87c. It shouldn't throttle and crash due to heat until it goes over +105c. Try upping the voltage a little and retest. Best keep a closer eye on the temps.

No problem here with DiRT3 but my card has a water block on it and never goes above 56c, have you tried increasing the volts as what you have is very low, my default core v is 1063 in MSI after burner

you need to unlock the voltage control from in the afterburner settings. All 3 of my asus 480's have 1063 has default voltage for 3d clocks, the .975 you have is the 2d clock voltage.

Yep, so is Hyperst's. I was just saying the card has been fine with no probs. It can't be heat related as 87 degrees is not that much for a 480.

sounds more like an under voltage issue rather than driver, something's not right if you cannot change it in after burner.

Get hold of gpuz and post up the screenie's of the card to see if everything is running as it should

i will post a screen shot tomorrow as i will have to install it again , been testing my 6970 since it was returned with no fault found

So you have had problems with a 6970 in the same system?

Maybe some incompatibility somewhere else, maybe motherboard like you say.

well the mobo was a b-grade purchased from ocuk around 3-4 months ago , the 6970 was hitting 98.5c until i replaced the Tim .

was ok for a short while then temps were up again , got it back and temp are still hitting 92.5c @stock speeds in a few dx11 games .

the same games with the gtx480 would be running at between 82 to 84c at room temps upto 24c , when i had bathed the do the room temps were 26c and in dirt3 it was reaching 87c while racing .

this was when it started to stutter and go slow-mo , i turned the fan speed to 70% and it ran like it should . i also noticed the system temp was hitting 52c which was higher than my cpu ( cpu 48c while gaming) .

so it looks like it is the mobo tbh
