Asus HD7970 DC2 - problems with display outputs.

Hi Guys,

i got my new asus hd7970 directcu2 over the weekend, am well impressed with the card, a massive improvement over my old 550ti, but i am having issues with running multiple displays.

when i recieved the card, i installed it and plugged in both monitors using the two DVI ports (exact same setup as i was using with the 550ti, just unplugged from that and plugged back into the 7970), one worked, one didnt, no worries i thought, fired up windows, installed drivers etc, rebooted, same problem. so i powered down, reseated the cables etc, tried again, no joy, tried swapping the two imputs around, the 2nd monitor fired up but not the first, so ruled out it being a cable or monitor issue.

have now tried it with a display port to dvi converter, things here get even stranger. working from the bottom upwards, the displayports do nothing, same as the bottom DVI port (have tried all of these with just 1 monitor and get no screen display, not even at post). if i plug the 2nd monitor into the top most displayport, with the main monitor in the top DVI, CCC detects the 2nd monitor, but will not display an image to it. trying the various multi display options all just seem to turn both screens black.

there is a switch on the top of the card, which from what i can tell from the box (no manual with the card, only a geneic quick setup, and the manual on the cd only covers software not hardware :/) has soemthing to do with the top most DVI and top most displayport, but in either position it makes no difference.

im begining to think that there is an issue with the card in some way, but seeing how it doesnt have a manual anywhere i dont know if i have missed something in my setup, have been a lifelong nvidia user so havent any experience with ccc or amd cards, just wondering if anyone can shed any light on the issues?

thanks
lumi.

thanks for the replies :) now that i actually look at the pitcutre on the box it shows that only one of the DVI outputs is vga compatable, and indeed there is 1 x DVI-I and 1 x DVI-D (although i didnt have a clue what the difference was until you explained it, so thanks again:))

i cant find an active DP to VGA adapter on the OC site, any ideas where i could get one? or am i just better to use this as an excuse to get a new monitor? and if i do get a new one, is there any issues with using 1 vga monitor and 1 dvi?

thanks again.

ok, thanks again for the help, put my mind at ease, was worried that the card was knackered, theres a lot of negativity about it around, but i really do like it so am very pleased it was just me doing it wrong :)

thats good to know, altho i would go for a 1920x1080 to match the current newest one, so that should be ok? also, if i wanted to add a third 1920x1080 in a few months and use eyefinity, would the VGA (or anything else) then become an issue?

awesome, am going to walk up to the local computer shop and see if they have an active DP-VGA adapter tomorrow. i may even be tempted to go and look at getting another monitor anyways, always wanted to play across 3 screens :)

thanks again :)
