ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe: Memory Problem!

Hi there boys & girls,

Popped in to OcUK just for a new mouse (got a Copperhead & Razer Control Mat which are fantastic by the way - after a small adaptation period from my MX1000) and walked away with a new Mobo/CPU/RAM also... :p

Never mind. Anyway, quite happy with the Asus mobo so far with one problem. I got a Dual Channel Kit from G.Skill (2 x 1Gb sticks) DDR2 5300 to go with it. If I place the sticks in the same couloured RAM banks for dual channel operation the motherboard crashes at boot-up, it doesn't make it to the Windows startup screen.

I pressume the motherboard is not compatible with this memory then, they work fine in non-dual channel mode but mem bandwidth is very poor.

I therefore need to swap these for something that will work! Any suggestions? The manual says it likes Crucial and Samsung - plus a couple others but OcUK doesn't stock them.

Hence possibilities are:

Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C5 Dual Channel Kit (CT2KIT12864AA667) (MY-084-CR)

Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Ballistix Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA663) (MY-079-CR)

I'd rather go for the Ballistix. The part # in the manual is: BL12864AA664.16FA

Can anyone confirm this will indeed work for me?

Also, since I picked it up in person, will OcUK swap this RAM for me? They are obliged to aren't they? if they sold me something that doesn't work?

Thanks!

Loko

best to check asus's list of memory that actually works on the board as there is a whole load that doesn't work on it properly and its better not to waste your money.

I heard this board can be very picky on memory the best of the bunch seems to be Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-108-CS) this is what i shall be buying.

ASUS recommends CORSAIR and it seems that most people that own this board to my finding use the memory mentioned above. It seems that NVIDIA and CORSAIR worked together on the new batchs of nFORCE 5XX motherboards.

Heres the blurb from CORSAIR.

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-108-CS)
The Twin2X2048-6400C4 is a 2048 MByte matched pair of DDR2 SDRAM DIMMs. This part delivers outstanding performance in the latest generation of dual-channel DDR2-based motherboards. It has been tested extensively in multiple DDR2 motherboards to ensure compatibility and performance at its rated speed. This memory has been verified to operate at 800MHz at the low latencies of 4-4-4-12. The Twin2X2048-6400C4 comes with Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP), the open standard for performance module SPD’s jointly developed by Corsair and NVIDIA. EPP SPD’s on Corsair modules allow users to automatically configure EPP enabled motherboards with aggressive memory performance settings, for maximum memory and system performance.

Yes it is rather expensive whats not but its the best buy for memory free issues.

I have the non sli version of this board and the G.Skill ram and have probs with it running in ddr 667, but it works fine for me at ddr 533 and i dropped the latency down too 3.3.3.9 which it seems happy with.
