Asus M5a97 Evo R2.0 Audo problems

Hi All,

I recently changed my GFX card to a MSI R9 390 and it has crowded the space on the motherboard meaning I can't use the PCI sound card I had since I upgraded to the Asus M5a97 Evo R2.0 and AMD 8320 a couple years back.

this has reared a problem where I can get any audio from the jacks in the back and front of the case. I have reinstalled the drivers and still can't get anything in the playback devices (hdmi only listed from GFX card) and there is no realtek HD audio manager visibkle anywhere.

Has anyone come accross this before and have any ideas that doesn't require re installing the OS as I want to avoid that! I will be having another go at it tonight but I though some one here may have experienced this or have the Mobo that can direct me to the drivers they used. This isn't a new problem but one I circumvented with a sound card until now.

Thanks

Have you enabled the onboard audio in the bios ?

Hi Micky, I have indeed. Haven't tried diabling then re enabling yet as it's always been enabled.

As a note I am just reading the manual online for the board and it mentions the realtek HD audio Manager but this isn't in the system tray anywhere and I can't find where it is installed.

Any ideas on if this is a seperate install and where I can get it from?

Tried again now I got back re installed the drivers from the website for the board and nothing. Can see it is installed in program list but nothing in device manager no sound options and not listed as a playback device..... Mightily confused now.

It's listed in device manager but as High definition audio device and doesn't state realtek. There is no realtek hd audio manager in control panel and sound is definately enabled as the only section with sound in bios has only one option and it's enabled.

Will have to go to parents at weekend to see if I can find the disc for it.

Mine is listed as the same thing, I didn't install the realtek drivers and I just used the ones windows installed by default and it works perfectly fine, rear ports or the front ports.

Try uninstalling it from device manager and also uninstall any driver packages that you installed for realtek in 'programs and features'. Reboot, see what windows does and then see if you have working sound.

*edit*

I noticed you're board has SPDIF on the rear panel. Which port are you trying to use, this one, or the normal 'green' 3.5mm jack? Can you also post a picture of your listed 'sound' devices like this:

Below is what I get for a default install. I am just using the standard green audio jack. If I then install the realtek drivers I get what you get above but then don't get anything different if plugged in.

I think it's now a hardware fault and the ports are broken!

Has the front case audio socket been connected to motherboard's proper audio header ?
There are two connector types for audio headers: AC97 or HD Audio, which one did you populate ? And set up in BIOS accordingly ?
Is motherboard BIOS newest ?
Which operating system you've got ? It's important as long as you download drivers for correct operating system :)
And it's always good idea to disable in BIOS all unused things (like FireWire, COM ports, externat SATA controllers etc)

BTW, there's more audio options in BIOS (so looks like you've got not the newest):
SB HD Azalia Configuration
Options for SB HD Azalia.
HD Audio Azalia Device [Enabled]
Allows you to enable or disable the HD Audio controller.
Configuration options: [Disabled] [Enabled]
Azalia Front Panel [HD]
Allows you to set the front panel audio connector (AAFP) mode to legacy AC’97 or
high-definition audio depending on the audio standard that the front panel audio
module supports.
[AC 97]
Sets the front panel audio connector (AAFP) mode to legacy AC’97
[HD]
Sets the front panel audio connector (AAFP) mode to high definition
audio.
SPDIF Out Type [SPDIF]
[SPDIF]
Sets to [SPDIF] for SPDIF audio output.
[HDMI]
Sets to [HDMI] for HDMI audio output

Thanks Biuro I'll make sure the newest bios is installed next. I moved the gfx card to the lower slot for now to put old sound card in so audio restored to headphones for the most part so I can at least study. Will update the bios first and see how far that gets me. I am still tempted at re installing windows also.
