Maybe naith or rj could help me on this. If sandybridge oc fsb/blck is a NONO what point of these extreme mobos? Assuming you just oc with the multi and voltage as long as the mobo has good voltage regulaters?

Better voltage control. Better build quality, more features e.g. more SATA, USB ports, dual gigabit lan, extra headers, more power phases, extra PCI slot, crossfire/SLI support, intergrated X-FI audio etc.

The list goes on!

Brilliant slot spacing for 4-way SLI/Crossfire there...

Surely they could have made it with 7 lanes (like most of the SB boards) and done this:

GPU1
PCI/PCI-e x1
GPU3
PCI-e x4
GPU2
PCI/PCI-e x1
GPU4

Since any case that is going to be bought with 4-way SLI/Crossfire in mind will have 8 slots...

Oh, and why, if Asus make the frankly superior Xonar sound cards, do they use X-Fi on their motherboards?

X-Fi is better than stock realtek or Intel audio. It is a nice addition I certainly noticed the difference going from a RE2 to a UD9 before I bought my soundcard. (which is a Xense :p)

My perfect layout in the Maximus would be:

-1: GTX 580 (watercooled)
-2: 240GB revodrive
-3: GTX 580 (watercooled)
-4: 240GB revodrive
-5: GTX 580 (watercooled)
-6: Xense sound card

Excessive but would be pure win :D

I bet by the time Anandtech do a review of this motherboard against a £100 motherboard gaming wise, the peformance increase will be 1 or 2fps if that. ;)

It's always the case.

is there going to a cheaper formula edition of this?

I had the original maximus formula s.e but that died due to a watercooling leak, I was using a swiftech h2o compact and decided to connect the nb to the loop as the motherboard had a built in waterblock but I made a mistake of using the hose clamps supplied with the motherboard. lucky for me I managed to get a full refund as the etailer didn't have anymore in stock nor had any other motherboard I was after at the time.

You'll pay for the feature set more so than the performance. Still, it's very expensive!

Thats how I would expect an expensive mobo to have its layout, just like the Rampage III Extreme. If it doesnt have the same slot layout as the R3E, its not worth the price to me.

I dont understand why Asus went from a perfect slot layout on the R3E to this. You cant even use two graphics cards with 3 slots spacing for each on top of a soundcard with this layout.

Gotta love the pricing

Considering its 1.6 to the pound how the heck can it be this

Below from said articel....

"Of course, as always, a board like this does come at a high price. £299 /$349 is a lot for a P67 board but this is a case of the consumer getting what they pay for."

Should be more like £218 so maybe £239.99 with a bit of rounding up and adding on for rip off britain :)
