There's a voice that keeps on calling me.
Hi folks, ive finally hooked up my N56u to the crappy super hub. Just wondering what the recommended firmware is. Its currently on 1. X Something.

Is it worth putting a 3rd party fw on it at all?

I'm not sure of all the exact features but it's basically a better UI, VPN server built in, better DDNS handling, the ability to run other app plugins on the router, better and more devices can be used on the USB port, wake-on-lan, SSH support.

Some of these are available on the latest official firmware too, if you don't need all the advanced features then I wouldn't bother tbh. I personally went for the latest official FW to see what it was like and I have had no need to go with the custom one. The official FW is very good on it's own and a big improvement over the older versions.

This a rough idea of the interface on older firmware although it hasn't changed much from this in the latest version.

The firmware itself is so slick and allows functions I had problems with the older ASUS firmware, Everything just works. Extra Features as well included.

Long thread here about it.

Hope this helps I suggest trying it. I don't think you will be dissapointed and you can always revert if you wanted.

I just got the N56U, which came with version 1.0.1.3 for the FW so i upgraded it to the latest version 3 FW, but have noticed that they have removed the gaming QoS option!!, is there nothing like that in the latest official FW?

Just add rule manually?

Yeah that has me completely stumped, the old way they display it was soo much easier for users who dont have a clue about QoS, you just clicked game, internet, p2p or stream and whihc order you wanted then in....now i dont have a clue.

Does the cutom FW have options for boosting the power/range of the signal?

Whats the difference between the '****', 'micro' and 'full' FW versions for the goolge cfw?

Also when you guy update your FW does your router actual reset itself as my router appears not to, it just says its updating constantly and never actual reboots itself
