I've been having a shufty around and I think it's come down to either a Asus or an Acer.

Which one would you guys get and why? Or is there another option I should consider?

Cheers in advance for any advice. :)

Ah, so he did. Well, the Asus is TN and Acer is IPS... both have known issues. The Acer will likely have IPS glow, some BLB and the general apperance of the monitor is cheap with the chunky bezel and glossy piano black. The Asus PG279Q would be an alternative, but there is still high likelihood of glow. The Asus is TN as I say, so will suffer from inferior colour reproduction, less vibrancy and is also known to have an issue with pixel inversion. The AG coating on the screen is also rather unpleasant by most accounts. It is a faster panel though (1ms vs 4ms), and is 3D Vision capable, if that matters to you.

You could also consider the Acer X34 if your budget would stretch to it. It is slightly better on the above issues, and being ultrawide would offer more immersion.

Hmmm, you haven't really sold me on either of those at all! :D

No way I can stretch to an Acer X34. My budget is pretty much at it's limit for the 2 monitors I linked.

Is there anything else within this price range I could be looking at?

It will primarily be used for gaming and my main reasons for buying it are G-Sync (will be powered by a GTX 980) and hopefully vastly improved frame rates. Currently using an old and crappy Samsung Syncmaster B2230 @ 60hz, so anything would be an improvement! ;)

Acer has poor CS technical team, they took my lap top twice to fix a problem. (The first time they said they cant find any problem...I was shocked)
Collection and delivery was fast though.

Wouldn't touch Acer with a barge pole tbh. Build quality is absolutely appalling! Not to mention poor customer service.

Wouldn't say Asus is much better at this point - I'm almost upto 3 weeks waiting on my ROG Swift RMA and Asus seem to have lost the details of my RMA - other people are commenting that they've had to wait ~9 weeks for turn around lately.

Personally going back to sticking to Dell or Samsung for monitors in the future.

I would suggest you take a look at the Dell S2716DG... it's similar to the Asus PG278Q (both TN and probably the same panel), but early reports would suggest it has an improved AG coating and is free of the pixel inversion. This hasn't been 100% confirmed yet, but personally I'd certainly feel more comfortable buying from Dell than Asus or Acer anyway! TFT Central will be publishing a review in coming week or so.

The Acer is being replaced this month by the XB271HU.

Really not much of a step-up over the XB270HU... in fact apart from the design and the extra 21Hz, it won't be anything more, and will still be maligned by glow just as all these new IPS screens are.

I agree I cant see it being a huge step above the last model, reviews will be with us soon no doubt. However considering its replacement model is out this month I would wait before buying the XB270HU. Who knows a price drop to clear EOL stock might arise.

Customer service wise I'm only going off what people on here have said. With regards to build quality having had both an Asus and an Acer I'd have to say the Asus was far superior. I had the Acer GD245HQ, one of the first 120Hz TN panels and for the money I paid the build quality was absolutely terrible. Paint overspray on the stand, poor fitting bezel, the thing wobbled when you so much as looked at it! Not to mention the disgraceful washed out panel and poor viewing angles. Hasten to add it didn't last long before I sold it on. Happy now with my 32" VA panel Samsung :D

I wouldn't go near the Asus. I had one years ago. The problems I had with the monitor itself (a complete failure of most of the panel) were nothing compared to the disastrous customer service I received when RMAing the monitor. The replacement died three months later at which point I bought my Dell U2711. Six years later and it still hasn't put a foot wrong. I don't do too much gaming these days but when I do, I don't feel at a disadvantage playing multiplayer. My money would go on something like the Dell U2715H. A friend recently bought one and couldn't be happier with it.

Another friend has the Asus and had to have it RMA'd. The replacement was a refurb and had a dead pixel. They refused to swap it again because it was apparently 'acceptable' on a three week old monitor. I wouldn't touch an Asus product again.

Ive had an Asus monitor for years worked perfectly. I also have a variety of other Asus products so I tend to vear towards them however I dont think you would go wrong with either.

I've always bought Asus and will continue to. I've just bought the pg278q after so much deliberation! Production date August 2015, hopefully all issues with this monitor is sorted!
