Hi there,

As I'm new to building a PC by myself I need advice regarding a monitor.

I was looking for a decent gaming monitor which has no issues with ghosting in 3D mode and which is 120Hz and looks stylish.

What I've found is

Asus VG236H
BenQ XL2410T

Price differences between them are not huge, however I preffer ASUS ( my build is 90% ASUS hardware ) should I go for it?

Need a specialist advice here, same as gamers :)

Thanks.

Eliam

My build:

P7P55D-E, GTX 560ti ASUS, Crucial M4 SSD 64GB, Antec 1200, i5 760@4Ghz, Silver Arrow.

The ASUS offers superior visual responsiveness to the BenQ (specifially better handled overdrive and far fewer negative artifacts from this). BenQ has improved this slightly with their newer XL2410T revisions but it is still some way off the ASUS when it comes to visual responsiveness. According to fairly questionable and inaccurate testing the ASUS has slightly higher input lag but it tends to come in spikes and has only been 'verified' using a notoriously iffy methodology. The more important subjective analysis of many, many users suggest that input lag is not something to be concerned about with either monitor.

The other major difference between them is that the ASUS has a 'Color Shine' anti-reflective (glossy) screen coating on a 23.6" screen whereas the BenQ has a 23.6" matte surface instead. From my testing the BenQ has much poorer presets and even after calibrated successfully lacks the shade variation and vibrancy of the ASUS. If you don't mind glossy screens I would consider the ASUS the better deal at the moment.

Thanks for advice PCM2, I will probably go for it but would like to hear more about these two.

Ah yes. I saw your thread and was meaning to pull this one up as I'm sure this question had been asked not long ago.

Have you actually been paying any attention to the replies in your own thread? http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18307199&highlight=backlight+username_pcm2.

And as stated above: "The other major difference between them is that the ASUS has a 'Color Shine' anti-reflective (glossy) screen coating on a 23.6" screen whereas the BenQ has a 23.6" matte surface instead. From my testing the BenQ has much poorer presets and even after calibrated successfully lacks the shade variation and vibrancy of the ASUS.". If you want 'brighter colours' the ASUS is better for this due to the screen surface allowing direct light transmission without 'dulling' diffusion.

Is the ASUS better then the LG W2363D considering the price difference?

Its a good monitor if you dont mind the glossy screen. Didnt notice any ghosting or input lag and it felt smooth as hell.
Also i would think 3d would look better on the asus with its glossy screen and vivid colours.

But i sold mine because i didnt like the 16:9 on a 23 inch screen mainly because i came from a 27 inch 60hz monitor with 1920 x 1200. Also you can pick up the asus for around £230 new these days but ocuk abit slow droping price :p

Hi guys! I have news on my Asus VG236!

I got the monitor, and I am so pleased with it! Its the best purchase I have made this year, and I have just moved house so there's been a lot of purchasing!

I had a Flatron W2453TQ which this has replaced, and I must say, the difference is staggering! The other monitor is only a year old, so I wasnt expecting much difference, but my god... It's like someones added 100 extra variations of colour to everything! Not just in game, but even searching the web, I can see such an improvement! All the colours are so vibrant and clear.

Straight out the box, the colours were so bright they nearly melted my face off, so I had to tone down the brightness and contrast by 15 points each. Moving away from the touch sensitive buttons on the old monitor to real buttons o nthe new ones was a god send. I had to press menu buttons multiple times before for it to recognise I wanted it to do something, but now I just have to give the button a push once and ta-da!

I have just been playing white pass on battlefield bad company 2, and everything is so much better! I didn't know what affect 120hz would really make, and I can tell you, playing this game is like watching real life running water. I cannot tell you how smooth and clean this is. For anyone whos played, you will know the wall at the top of the map you can sit behind (to the right, at the top of the hill that leads to out of bounds down the hill), I can now clearly see enemies on the ridge on the far side of the map. Not just see them moving or the odd pixel, I mean perfectly! This is down to the glossy screen going up from a matte finish, and down to 120hz for making movement so move, I no longer mistake moving leaves out the corner of my eyes for people, and do not miss people sat in bushes, as the player models are no longer vaugely the same colour as bushes, they are clearly players sat in bushes.

I can't comment on 3D yet, but I have been blown away by this monitor so far. If you have not tried 120hz, and you think your old monitor is good enough, I tell you now, it isn't good enough.

This ASUS model inparticular is perfect. No backlight bleed, no ghosting, no perceivable input lag, no dead pixels... The only thing I do have, is a tiny spec of dust on the wrong side of the glass, which casts a small shadow which is visable on a static white background (google search mainly) but invisible at any other time.

I have seen MAC monitors, and for colour and vibrancey, and sheer quality to be honest, I think bang per buck is better on the ASUS than the MAC screens. I don't see how anything currently on the market using the same technology in the same can match this thing.

If you buy this, you will not be disapointed. I really am that astounded.

EDIT: Also, the reflection may be an issue to some people from the glossy screen, but I'm i na well light environment at the moment, and I did not notice reflections in game, but I do when web browsing. I don't get any reflection when I dim the lights (Hurrah for dimmer switches!) tThe reflections don't bother me anyway, the colour from the screen cuts through most reflection anyway. I don't feel I would be getting as much out of this monitor if I didn't have such a good mouse (Saitek Cyborg RAT 7), and I don't feel my last monitor was doing my mouse justice. Don't ask me how I percieve this, it just seems to be true. Movement matches the mouse perfectly, I don't know what else to say!

Hi, i've just ordered the ASUS for £230, going from 18" BENQ to this, roll on tomorrow for delivery and BFBC2.

You won't be disappointed! I don't even get tearing on 120hz with vsync off with this thing! Its great!

EDIT: Mind you, I do have 2x 460 GTX OC in SLI so this is going to help for lack of tearing I would hae thought, but I still wasn't expecting it to be perfect (at least, I didn't notice any tearing in 1.5 hours of BFBC2)

Also, incase anyone was wondering, it is possible to run a 120hz monitor along side a 60hz, which I have ended up doing. I wasnt sure if all outputs had to be the same frequency or not at the time, but its fine as they can run independently.

Just set up the Asus, first thoughts, glossy screen is glossy

Doesnt make any difference when in use though, not played a game on it yet but dark colours seem kind of light in standard mode, the blue OCUK back ground seems quite light

I'll be trying it with BC2 in a min, just finishing my pot noodle :p
