have done a fresh install of windows and in device manager its displaying a ! device and its labelled "SM Bus Controller" ..the problem is that i have no idea what this device is, any advice?

Apologies for *bumping* this back up from '07, but did you ever find out how to rectify the issue?.

Having the same problem tonight after a reformat.

Will post this duplicate reply in this thread as well, in case someone does a search on the forums for the same issue in the future. ;)

Problem solved!!!!

After further digging around on the web, it transpires that this driver regularly fails to install along with the Intel Chipset drivers during a reformat/clean install. Quite why it does this I have no idea.

So what you need to do is go to Device Manager, click on the SM Bus Controller and then click on "Update Driver".

Then point Windows towards the root directory of the chipset drivers where all the .inf files are located.

It will then pick up the SM Bus Controller from there and install it correctly.

:)

Hey there,

I was wondering if you might be able to point me towards the directory where the chipset drivers are stored? I'm not so great with computers and this SM Bus thing on my P5B is really annoying me. Any help would be greatfully received.

Thanks for your time, Nick

Nick, you'll need to download the chipset drivers from Asus. From this page, select which operating system you're using from the dropdown menu, and you can then download the chipset drivers.

Remember where you've saved the drivers to, you can then point "Update Driver" to the correct folder.

Hi,

It will be wherever you extracted your Intel Chipset drivers to m8.

For instance, mine were downloaded and saved to my secondary hard drive at E:\P5K 2\P5K drivers.

Within that directory a folder called Chipset Inf is located and within that folder there is a subfolder called just Inf.

In there are a few other sub folders splitting up different types of drivers. I believe the SMBus inf file is located within the folder called All.

So as mentioned above, when you click on "Update Driver" and it wants to know where to look for the driver, point it to that folder/directory and it should pick up the SMBus inf file from within.

Hope that helps.

Many, many thanks for your replies. Downloaded the chipset drivers and pointed the hardware installation wizard to them - all sorted!

Thanks again, your help is much appreciated, Nick

Glad you got it sorted.

Welcome to the forums btw, oh and "claimed". :p

To explain = "Claimed" is a bit of a tradition here on the OcUK boards. Any new member within their initial first few posts can be "claimed" by an existing member.

No idea what it means, but thats how it goes....lol. :D
