Death Star or Mount Doom, it depends on the day.
Just wondering if anyone had one of these, I have read the overclock well. Has anyone overclocked a e8400 on one of these? Plus I read that they dont like big coolers, does anyone think I would have a problem fiting a zalman 9700 nt? Do they do a wifi version ddr2?

I've not clocked an E8400 on it yet however i am buying one within the next month or so. I'm not sure about big coolers being much hassle as I've only got an AC7 on it and as far as i know there isn't a Wi-fi version.

The P5E is DDR2 only but has no wifi. 8400's do clock very well on it IF you get a good cpu. They are a bit hit or miss at the moment and loads of us are having problems getting decent stable overclocks with the new Wolfdales. It does'nt just affect the P5E either. As for large coolers, there are people on XS using Thermalright Ultra 120's and Extreme's, Zalman CNPS9500/9700's, Asus Slient Knight's, Big Typhoon's and AC Freezer 7 pro's amongst other's.

I've got the P5E3 on its way in the post with an E8400 - anyone tried that combo for overclocking?

Sorry what do you IF you get a good CPU? I was looking at getting the Zalman 9700 nt nvidia.

If you get a good cpu i have seen a 8400 up to 4.7Ghz on water and 4.53Ghz on air over at XS. The Zalman 9700 should fit as there are people over there using that combination. You will need to be very lucky and get a good cpu though. A lot of us are having problems with these Wolfdales regarding stability, temps and high voltages needed for decent clocks. At the moment i would'nt recommend getting one. In fact i am getting rid of mine it's so pants.

Interesting stuff. I am hopefully driving down to OCUK on monday to purchase my new system, and I had planed on getting the Asus P5E X38 with a Q6600 GO. But I still have the "no buy the wolfdale" going round in my head. But reading some of the comments on the forum I am still tempted by the Q6600. Hmmmm

Out of the box the zalman 9700 does not fit the asus P5E.

I fitted mine last night but needed to make a small modification to the plastic support that fixes around the cpu socket. Orientate the support so the shaped cutout for the cpu lever is in the bottom left (when looking towards the back). You will see there is a bit of plastic that is used for AMD installations which hits the mobo heatsink and prevents the holes from lining up.

I dremmelled that off leaving plenty of material so the captive nut didn't break off(junior hacksaw will suffice) and it fits easy! Really a doddle to fit but get a friend to help hold the cooler when trying to fix it down with the torsion bar and screws. Looks impressive!

The Zalman 9500 fits but you have to cut off the tab on the bracket to clear the heatpipe, its no biggy though.

I just got one......wanted a motherboard that was a little more future proof and had dual x16 pci-e slots for crossfire....so I bought a P5E for a pretty good price

I've been struggling with it all day...it's been giving me random lockups and weird network disconnects, and I couldn't seem to get it over 333fsb regardless of voltages!!!! I flashed my BIOS to the latest 605 version.....then flashed it to the Formula Rampage BIOS (which is really amazing btw, so many options), but I still had problems!

Turns out it doesn't like my Ballistix in slots 2 and 4? Also apparently Crucial have pulled the P5E out of the compatibility list...but so far it seems stable @ 460FSB since I swapped slots. Not a crazy high fsb I know, but like I said, this Rampage BIOS is daunting so I'm taking it slow.

It's a pretty nice lookin board:

nice board!

does it have any VDROOP issues i am potentially interested in one for QuadCore OCing

I don't have a quad core at the moment, but running my e6300 with loadline calibration enabled there is zero vdroop. Whereas with the same setting on my P5K there was about .01v droop

That's 1 of my 2 cats, Lila Khat :) the other is Ghenghis Khat the destroyer, but he's not in the picture obviously :/

With the normal P5E bios there is terrible vdroop. Set to 1.4v in the bios you are looking at only 1.34 to 1.35 in cpu-z. There is a pencil mod though which cures it. Maybe the Rampage bios fixes it but i have'nt had the bottle to flash to it yet.

Strange that you are having problems with your Ballistix. Mine works in either slots and have also been able to tighten the timings up as well. I only got the Ballistix because my Geil Ultra PC2-6400 would'nt work in it. There are tales about ram problems over at XS though. It's weird. Some combinations work for some people yet identical combinations don't work for others.

Yeah I've seen a lot of mixed reports regarding Ballistix. Some people seem to have them working great, others can't even get them to boot.

I have Geil black dragon working fine on this board 6400 cas 5 stuff and is overclocking to 530fsb with 5,5,5,15 timings.
I have the v-droop aswell, but its not really a major issue to me as I can see my true volt in CPU-Z
I like the board a lot, not flashed the bios at all, still using the one that came with it.
I am waiting to see how the news quads are doing, as that is probably gonna be next upgrade, well only if they are good and overclock well.
