Ok so I just got some new componenets yesterday.

Q6600, Asus P5KC and 2GB OCZ PLATINUM XTC, Artic Cooler A7.

The rest of the system will be from my previous X2 build, x1900xt and a decent Tagen 500W PSU + couple of sata drives.

Connected everything up yesterday and when powering on the CPU fan will starting spining and you can hear the disks wind up but then within second it turns itself off. Only to then turn itself back on within a couple of seconds and then off again. This cycle continues until you pull out the power plug.

There is no POST, no bleeps or anything else which could indicate where the problem is coming from. I've stripped the machine back to minimal components, tried the ram in different slots and orders, I've tried resetting the CMOS multiple times and the problem still persists. I doubt it's the RAM as even with that removed completley I should get beep error codes.

I've done a search online and this seems to be a common problm but I've not seen any solutions yet which have worked for me. Anyone got any sugestions or is my board or cpu dead?

I had this problem it was a faulty cpu.
Was that a q6600 as well or another 775 socket chip?

Last Intel I had was a PIII :p

Gonna have to check if any of the new work pc's have a socket 775 I could use to test. Don't know anyone else who has one. Grrr.

Could it be the BIOS doesn't support the Q6600 yet? One of the reason I got it was because in the bunf it specificaly mentioned quad core.

your board supports kentfield quads 100% from the factory.
Is there no way you can get your hands on some generic ddr2 ram and an old P4 s775 chip to test on your mb?

Well I just tried some generic ddr2 and a P4 prescot 2.7 skt 775 in the mobo and I'm still getting the same symptoms. Powering on and then turning on and off after several seconds.

Looks like it's a dead board :(

Gonna have to get on the RMA.

I had a similar problem with a P5K Deluxe.

A lot of P5K boards get this problem when the BIOS is flashed in Windows. Maybe you were sent a returned board by mistake

Can anyone recommend between the following mobo's;

DFI LP UT P35-T2R
Abit IP35 Pro
MSI P35 Platinum
Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38
Abit IX38 QuadGT Intel X38
Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4 Intel X38

I don't really need an x38 but if I'm going to shell out a bit more on something better then why not future prof myself a bit?

My main requirements are quality, low noise, lots of usb ports, at least one eSATA, raid, one or two firewire ports.

Oh well buddy, you gave it your best shot!

I'd have to recommend the Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38 overall and the DFI for ultra overclocking tweaking and the Abit for ease of use.

Well the Formula arrived yesterday and everything is now working fine.

Got to say I'm pretty impressed so far, even coming from an X2. Pretty amazing being able to run two copies of orthos each assigned to two of the cores, while running AV scan, copying files, running a sub 30 sec superpi and surfing the web watching youtube and everything still being silky smooth while all four cores at 100%.

Cheers, I'll give it a try when I get home. 2 x Orthos assigned to the cores seemd to get them all up to 100% but if I can do that with one app then all the better.

Cheers for eveyone's advice.

So task manager is wrong then? ;)

As smooth as you need for surfing the web/watching youtube.

Surely that's the whole point of multiple cores and good task switching. XP will prioritize applications so that despite being at full load everything still gets the time it needs to be responsive.

Compared to a single core or even a X2 at full load this is "silky" smooth. No need to be a pedant. :p
