Got this old motherboard which I'm using for a little project. I need 2 devices (HD and CD-Rom drive) connected via IDE for installing Win 7 using a standard lead with one being the slave. Problem is it doesn't seem to detect the slave so I can't proceed.

I've looked through the BIOS but it's always possible I've overlooked the option in there, or is there some other way round this? I have also tried another two leads in case it was them.

You should see a block of pins about 6 in total.

1 pair should have a "Jumper" on them. Plastic with metal inside.

Look on top of the drive and it should have a diagram.

Got it! I'm presuming you mean the CD-ROM I need to change? The HD has 8 pins and the CD-ROM has 6 with the plastic cover being over right two.

There is no diagrams that I can see though.

You sure there's no diagram on either side of the CD-Rom? If not then trial and error should sort it.

Yup I got it, just put it in the middle it's now detected as another IDE drive now, thanks - but for some reason it won't boot up my Windows 7 install from the CD-ROM it just goes straight to the HD, which has a non-working Windows XP install on it (I have set boot priorities in the BIOS). Not sure what else I can do really, drive has got power and works fine (I borrowed it from my gaming pc).

Just a small update, I reformatted the HD in another machine but I still can't get Win 7 to boot from the drive, so I can install it onto the HD.

Anyone have any idea what it could be? It just doesn't come up with the normal message of "Press any Key to boot from CD", the lights on the drive come on (like it's booting from that) but then goes straight to the HD, which now gives a message of something like "BOOTMGR missing" obviously because there is now no OS on it.

Is it a CD or DVD drive you have?

I'm pretty sure Win 7 comes on a DVD so it'll never work in a CD drive.

Assuming you have a DVD drive then make sure the BIOS is set to boot from this first.

When you've installed Win 7 you can change the order to boot from the HDD first.

Sorry what I mean't was it's a DVD Drive and that's what I'm saying the BIOS is set to boot from DVD first. Can confirm there is nothing wrong with my Win 7 DVD or the drive as they both work fine in my other pc.

Try swapping the drives around so that the DVD is the master and the HDD is the slave.

You'll probably need to change the jumpers on the drives as well.

Ensure one is set to master and one to slave or alternatively use cable select.
