A few months ago my sisters 4 year old PC which has an ASUS P5L-VM failed to post, it just displayed a black screen with fans whirring etc, I initially swapped out RAM, Graphics and PSU but to no avail.

I then reset the CMOS and it fired up and has been fine since however it has today failed again and it turns out it had been unplugged from the mains which indicates to me that it maybe battery related. However is it normal for the board not to default to some sensible settings and display a post error rather than a black screen???

Do you think I am looking at a faulty board or just a need to replace the battery?

Well had the machine with me tonight and the CMOS battery was as dead as a dodo when I tested it, swapping the battery reset the CMOS and it posted.

I should have checked that last time I know, also the PC which is built by a major PC supplier beginning with M and ending in H has no speaker installed so no beep codes to assist grrrrr!
