Hi all, looking for a new mobo to go with my new Q6600 and 4GB of Ram, was told I would be much better going with the P45 chipset instead of the P43.
So i've been looking around and the Asus P5Q boards look pretty good (budget is around £80), however I'm a bit bewildered when it comes to all the different models.

So far i've seen....

P5Q
P5Q SE
P5Q SE Plus
P5Q SE2
P5Q SE/R
P5Q PRO

Can anyone help me decipher what the differing features are as I get the feeling some of them boards have stuff on them that i'm not going to use.

Or are there any all round better P45 boards for the £80ish mark?

PLEASE NOTE I AM NOT OVERCLOCKING. Everything is being left stock, so boards with endless multiplyers and all that doesnt really interest me!

Any help appreciated!!!! Thanks.

Buying a Q6600 and not overclocking means you'd be better off getting a faster clocked dual core.

Hefner is right though, no real point in getting a P45 as a P43 will do you fine.

Which faster clocked dual core would you recommend? I am also thinking of the Q6600 at stock speed but would value your advice on the alternatives?

I don't do clock tricks myself, ever since my ECS K7S5A wouldn't pass 144Mhz FSB without popping it's caps haven't had much faith in it, but maybe my experience of standard P5Q could be useful to someone...

I got myself the P5Q

My purchase criteria was this - fast but more importantly reliable system - accessible board
connectors - even with a single big gaming graphics card, accessible 3 x PCI slots for my PCI
cards
- sound, hardware high performance NIC (no CPU hogging realtek), HDTV tuner.

Asus P5Q, 2GB, Freezer 7 Pro through bolted with C2D 3Ghz mounted with AS5 centre line
+ 2 off centre lines of MX2, GF8GTS (MX2 compound), WD RE3 HD (AM set to silent),
Antec Signature,
Antec 900 fans low, BIOS settings in compatibility mode, WinXP, latest nvidia drivers and
control panel set to compatibility mode eye candy off, 3DMark2001SE Dragothic High 493.6
FPS.
Which is the same as my friend gets with his same CPU/VGA MicroATX G31 system, but I
have a lot more ports. And maybe overclockability, but other than theoretical tests, does it give a
better game experience I'm not sure, I remember in the past faster clocks have produced lower
speeds on some architectures.

Right now Speedfan reads, though house heating isn't on and it's quite cold, maybe higher in
summer lol:
Motherboard 27
CPU 27
GPU 47
HD 30

So far hasn't failed, and I should prey I haven't spoken too soon (tempting fate), playing all my old favourites at high res, original Call of Duty, Battlefield and
Vietcong at the most insane frame rates (around 300fps), apart from when I set EPU6 manually
to maximum
underclock out of curiosity got a reboot. Very fast booting from power to in windows browsing
around 22 seconds (maybe faster with my SW firewall which seems to take the longest to load) where I was used to around 30-40 seconds on my older system.
