There's been a debate over which board is faster clock/clock. Most say the ASUS is faster, wheras others firmly believe nothing seperates the 2.

I've taken the liberty to run a series of tests on both boards and publish the results for the benefit of the general public.

These are the tests I decided to run:

3D Mark 06 (Default settings)

3D Mark 2001 SE (Default settings)

Aquamark 3 (Default settings)

Super Pi 32M (Realtime priority)

F.E.A.R. Multiplayer Demo version 1.02 (Computer - High ; Graphics - custom : 1152 x 864, Everything on maximum, no soft shadows, 4 x AA, 16 x AF
)

All tests were run at 2 settings on both boards:

a) stock - 266 x 7 (1866 MHz), DDR2 667, 3-3-3-10

b) overclocked - 400 x 7 (2800 MHz), DDR2 800, 4-4-4-10

Hardware used was:

ASUS P5W DH Deluxe and Gigabyte GA-P965-DS3 motherboards

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 ES (Allendale 2 MB L2 Cache)
2 x 1 GB Team Xtreem PC2 5300 RAM 3-4-4-8
256MB Connect 3D X1800XT
Maxtor DiamondMax10 80 GB HDD
NEC ND 3500 AG DVD-RW drive
Antec Truepower 2.0 550W EPS 12v PSU

Stock Cooling was used throughout.

OS: Clean Install of XP Pro SP2 was used with each board
Graphics Drivers: ATi Catalyst 6.6 official

The X1800XT was run at stock speeds for each test.

This took me quite some time to do, and I hope it is of use to you.

Cheers,
Ash :)

A BIG thanks to Dan for sending out the mobo to me :)

32 mb PI is faster on the asus. And the rest of the test are so close it means nothing considering the asus feature set of firewire and wifi and xfire.

2 of 3 frames mean nothing in FEAR

but good job well done

You forgot to mention the price difference and the Gig will clock higher and is a newer board that will get better with bios rev's.

With regard to fear

31 57 128 Asus
34 66 150 Gig

I find that quite impressive.

The DS4 looks like it could become the Conroe board to have!

Both boards look like quality, stable and very overclockable motherboards. The asus is feature rich but do you need all the extras?

I would happily have the Gigabtye and have seen them on sale in UK for £94inc vat, at that price they appear to be extremely good value.

You pays your money and you take your pick.

Good thread Kitt, will help a lot of people make up their minds about choosing a mobo.

May I ask what you are using to rest the motherboard, and harddrive on?

Excellent review there thanks. :)

It looks like Im defnitaly going for a Gigabyte board, if only someone could tell me if its worth getting a DS3 or DS4 or DQ6??

Will they all be the same with regards to speed? does anyone know?

So far, it seems the DS3 is the best of the 3 in terms of overclockability :)

So would you reccomend the DS3 purely becuase of overclockability or is there more to it than that?

Bios Rev on the DS3 is F3 and F2 on the DS4. The DS3 had all the work so far. I have not seen that much on the DS4 with regard to testing but I would imagine the DS4 will perform on par with the DS3 if not better. Looking at the pics the power circuitry on the DS4 looks a tad more complicated which I'm hoping will lead to better regulation and thus a better stable OC. The DQ6 is a different beast and from a few post that I have read needs some Bios work.

I have a couple of DS4's arriving tommorrow and a 6600 & 6300 on pre order. I will do some testing between the 2 processors and might even buy a P5W DH to do some comparisons.

I also noticed the Ds3 -

1 x PCI Express X16 slot
3 x PCI Express X1 slot
3 x PCI slots

and the DS4 -

2 x PCI Express X16 slot(run @ x16, x4)
3 x PCI Express X1 slot
2 x PCI slots

Im new to pci express technology having just bought a x1900xt, is the x16 x4 better?

Also it says this about the dq6 - Supports new generation Microsoft operation system Windos VISTA

Is this not the case for the ds3/4?
