Hey guys,

I have a Asus P6T SE. Basically I changed some settings in the BIOS (put auto CPU fan control on, turned off splash screen).

I kept getting boot errors regarding the CPU fan error, press F1.

Fast forward to the other night, I finish on BF3. Computer then shuts down.

Won't turn on. Dead, nadda, zip. No CPU fan, no PSU fan, no case fan, no activity at all.

Troubleshooting so far:
Removed all RAM, Graphics, NIC - No go
Removed and reseated CPU (Core i7 920 D0) - No go.
Shorted green cable on PSU - CPU fan/case fan/psu fan all spin up and sound fine. PSU isn't dead (imo).

This HAS happened before, and it just 'started working' again after some messing. I believe it is directly related to the BIOS settings I tinkered with.

any ideas?

Okay, I've literally got this on a bread board now for testing, and it's completely dead.

The red power LED that is on the mobo itself is alight, but even when it's JUST the mobo (no cpu, just a case fan), nothing happens.

What do you expect to happen if you don't have any components plugged in?

You need to start by connecting the minimum components and try it then.

CPU, 1 stick of RAM and graphics card will be enough to see if it starts and you can get into the BIOS.

You should also clear the CMOS.

I expect the case fan to boot up. I am isolating it entirely to the motherboard.

It isn't starting, as per the original post. It is completely lifeless. If it doesn't boot with no components attached why would it boot up into BIOS with CPU, Ram, and 1 stick of RAM? Lol.

LOL at yourself.

A motherboard is just the foundation on which a PC is built.

Without the other components it'll do nothing by itself.

You could have a 100% perfectly working motherboard but unless you put the necessary components in it'll do nothing.

Most boards will react to the power pins being shorted and fire up the psu and any devices connected to it, without the cpu or RAM etc.. this is what he means.

If the case fan is connected to the motherboard then it may not "fire up".

Yes, but the psu fan and anything like a hdd or fan will 'fire up' ;) If its like the other few dead P6Ts and LGA775 Asus boards i've come across, the red light stays on and nothing works, i.e the psu etc.. The fans connected to the headers will work without the cpu or memory if the board was ok.

When you said "Most boards will react to the power pins being shorted and fire up the psu and any devices connected to it, without the cpu or RAM etc." then that means that some won't.

If you can confirm that they should on the P6T then that's fair enough.

New motherboard for the OP then :(

I've not seen any that haven't, just being cautious as my house is rather a little too small to house every motherboard ever produced. :)

You need a bigger house ;)

Is OCUK operating a creche or something?

Your comments are unnecessary and incorrect. A motherboard will fire up the PSU fan 100% of the time, otherwise how would it even be aware that the CPU is missing.

I went and purchased a Gigabyte G1 Sniper mobo.

I will now attempt to RMA my Asus P6T and probably build some kind of media PC with the spare components.
