My long running saga of trying to find an X58 board to drop my i7 920 into looks like it may have came to an end thanks to BENdage who has offered me an Asus P6X58D-E board at a half decent price. I've also got a triple channel kit of 6Gb Corsair XMS3 DDR3 to drop in there. Naturally, I've been looking the board up online for information prior to getting my paws on it and some of the stuff I've been reading on it has raised questions in my mind. The board itself seems to receive rave reviews but it seems like some folk have had issues with installing Windows onto SSD's with it.

I'm going to be hooking up my trusty OCZ Vertex 2E 60Gb which was bought new back in late 2010 from here on OcUK. It'll be my O/S drive and I'll be installing Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on it from a USB drive. Can someone post an idiots guide on how to go about this procedure? I'm particularly thinking about some of things I've read about the board and SSD's. On the motherboard, what should I plug my SSD SATA cable into as I see there's a Marvell controller and an Intel one? I *think* my Vertex 2E is a SATA 2 type. Do I need to change anything in the BIOS before starting the install, AHCI etc? Anything else in there I need to adjust before starting to install W7 from the USB stick? Just want to get it right first time and not muck anything up, can't afford too much downtime as this system is going to take over as my main web design and image editing machine so can't have it out of action for too long (hopefully). I've got 2 other SATA HD's to hook up for data etc, a 320Gb Seagate and a 250Gb Maxtor, but I guess they will just plug in after I've installed Windows onto the Vertex.

Wondering if past or current owners of one of these boards can advise me? Thanks!!

Marvell is slightly faster than the Intel but less reliable

Yes set SATA ports to ahci before install there's two ahci options, one for Intel and one for Marvell ports so enable them both

They are good boards I've owned three of them

Not sure how to install from Usb stick, but make it bootable and enter boot menu f8 I think and boot from Usb stick

Got this board here, unsure about installing windows from usb tbh. But youll want your drives on the intel sata ports, (blue ones). AHCI will indeed need to be enabled in bios. Leave your storage drives disconnected when installing windows and then connect them up once done. I used an ocz vertex 2e on the previous gen p6t deluxe without issue.

Btw, glad to see you finally got sorted with a board.:)

Excellent, cheers chaps. :)

While you are here :D, what's my first moves as far as overclocking goes? I've read that for a mild o/c on these boards with a 920 you only need change a couple of basic settings in the menu and don't even really have to touch voltages? Not looking to push it too hard, something reasonable will suffice. It's going to have a Coolermaster Hyper 612S sat on it and sit in a Zalman Z3 Plus case with 2 x front 120mm fans, 2 x rear 120mm fans and 2 x top mounted 120mm fans so airflow should be good. Lastly, there will be an MSI R7850 Twin Frozr in there to complete the system which runs pretty cool as well.
