Asus P8Z77-V won't boot unless fully powered off first

Hi

I have a brand new build (from Overclockers) with a ROG Maximus V Formula motherboard.

If I shut down the computer - either from a Windows command or via the power button - when I restart it doesn't fully boot up. It gets past the login but then just sits with a black screen. I can see and move the cursor but that's it.

The board's debug LED shows '40'.

I have to power down again and this time physically cut power from the wall socket. Then when I start up all is fine and the LED shows 'A0'.

Please could anyone cast any light as to why this might be happening?

Thanks

That is certainly confusing. Could you take a quick snap of the board and post a picture? Would probably be the easiest way to remove any doubt.

the maxiumus is a better board so id keep quiet:p

does it list what error code 40 is in the mb manual?

tried turning off full screen logo in the bios? that can sometimes cause boot issues

I can't find anything about code 40. Someone has suggested it could be a RAM issue but I've run RAMTEST and found nothing wrong. I think it's something to do with power. It's very odd because the board stays in standby mode (i.e. the ROG logo glows and reset button stays lit) even when the box is switched off and the wall power socket is switched off - I'm in the UK where wall sockets have an on-off switch.

The only way to cut power completely and avoid the 40 boot is to physically unplug the power.

I think I have a zombie motherboard

the board will store power even unplugged from the wall for a few minutes, then it will fade and the lights go out

enabled x.m.p profile for your memory?

"Windows 8's resume-from-hibernation algorithm is multi-core optimized. Windows 8 also introduces a Hybrid Boot feature. When users select the Shut Down option, it hibernates the computer, but closes all programs and logs out the user session before hibernating.
... So if you want to show A0 on your next boot, just press shift + shutdown when turning off you computer."

This works. It doesn't explain why 40 doesn't fully boot my machine but, hey, I can live knowing that I'm missing anything 'special' that Windows 8 might try to offer. It's also weird that my motherboard stay on standby even with the wall socket switched off (overnight - 8 hours +). Maybe there's some feature of the PSU I don't need to know about.

Thanks very much for helping me out everyone. Really appreciated.
