. How do I go about setting it up? Do people just alter on personal preference or is there some software out there to calibrate against?
Personally I just use the splendid option and selected whichever one I liked best (sRGB ended up it lol) I know you can get software and devices that cost a lot to calibrate it but I came across this http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ sorta handy if you know what your doing/looking for, might be-able to manually calibrate it (for gamma etc )

There are 2 calibrated profiles you can also try with your monitor on that list it explains how to install them ect if you have never done it before
