i dont know where to start .....

i purchased an asus r9 fury strix in february from overclockers and have been having no end of issues .... im starting to wonder if the card is bad.

windows 10, constant crashes in 3d games display turns off need to reset system .... farcry primal, hitman, fallout 4 ..... occasionally hearthstone and darkest dungeon can crash too.
tried all versions of drivers curently using 16.3 crimson

no overclocking ... windows power options on high performance
today i tried disabling power efficiency in radeon settings ... card goes crazy fans at max and it locks up windows .... after resetting, my system wont boot unless i completely power the system down and turn off power on psu for 10 sec but then after i boot to windows the power efficiency setting stays off but the card insta crashes with max fans the moment i login to windows.

i have to boot to safe mode and remove drivers with ddu, then install them again .... not touching the settings again !

my temps are all good cpu is in mid 30's under load, gpu during 3d gaming (when it works) is 60c to 70c.
i also have a fan mounted on my case door to cool my ram ect.

my old windows 7 system with a r9 280x never had any issues with crashes
but even when i run fallout 4 on my old windows 7 with the fury i get the same display turns off issue ... but i can at least play for an hour or so but sometimes fo4 crashes within a min or so.

my system .... using outer vision psu calculator my power usage is 555watts

nzxt phantom (orange and black)
sabertooth 990fx r1.0
fx 8350...@4ghz corsair h80 water cooler
16gb ddr3 1866 corsair vengance
asus r9 fury strix
lepa 850watt psu
asus xonar essence stx
asus pb287q 28" 4k monitor

any ideas ? should i consider sending the card back ?

I wouldn't hand around I'd send it back, How long have you had it? Has it got a bio's switch? have you got Afterburner installed? A couple of weeks back I installed the latest Afterburner and the temps on my Fury Trix increased even though it was not set to change anything, Un-installing it fixed that, God knows why but it did which is odd. It wasn't as extreme as your's but if you have it remove it and test on both bio's with no programs on and stock settings for the gpu. I seem to be okay running Real Temp, GPU-Z and CPU-Z. It's thanks to them I could see Afterburner was causing issues even when not used.
At the end of the day if it's not working as it should send it back.

this sounds more like a ram issue to me thana gpu one, if you tested it on 2nd rig and got the same overall problems then yes it's the gpu, but if it's only FO4 that remains it could be just driver or patch issue with the game, or just win10 got a rocky install.
you have 2 rigs i think you can stress test(not run one game) on both and see if the problem is the rig or gpu.

@AlamoX
i do have a second rigg but it could not handle the strix or even my old 280x its a pile of crap running a dual core 4600+ and 4gb ddr2 !
its only used to listen to podcasts and watch some youtube ect when i go to bed.

just a follow up ..... i had to wait for my summer holidays before i tackled this issue
im almost ready to reinstall windows 10 fresh no upgrade ... but then i tried something i read somewhere and that was to down clock the fury (i set -10% gpu clock = 900max)
ran farcry primal no crashes ! played through several check points, before i could not even get to the first cave before it crashed.
then i tried hitman, ran the benchmark (dx11 mode) twice through, no crashes.

im still going to reinstall win10 but currently im going to hold off for some more intensive testing, but fingers crossed i may have at least solved my problems enough to wait for next year for am4 tech. ... but im none to happy to have to slow my fury down to get it stable in 3d games but due to my sabertooth 990fx being a rev 1 as well as my components that are at least 4 years old now, i cannot rule out that something else still could be the main cause ... its now just a matter of money and thats something i dont have enough of right now and it would be a real waste to buy components for my current system when zen is right around the corner .... and no i dont want intel or nvida tech ... i know its faster but its way beyond my price point.

Try lowering the GPU core clock 300Mhz and see if that fixes the crashing. If it does, bad GPU. If it doesn't, could still be a bad GPU but you should continue troubleshooting. Try it in a different system, try it in your current system in a different PCI-E slot, with different PSU power connectors, with a different PSU, etc.

There is an issue with Fallout 4 at the moment, I am unable to play it for more than 30-40 minutes without getting a Windows closing due to lack of memory message, I was thinking it was due to only having 8 gb's of ddr3 ram installed but I'm pulling that guess out of my butt, and seeing that you have 16gb's it's clearly not that, it could be a gpu driver issue or the game itself, But as I was getting it on other games before it's more than likely the drivers.
I was getting it with other games briefly and posted on the forum about it a couplr of months ago (I'd forgotten all about your thread) but a reinstall of the OS and Steam etc seemed to solve it at the time, At that time I was unable to run Dying Light for more than a minute before it happened and I thought about buying 16gb's of memory but decided to do the reinstall first as I don't really want to buy more DDR3 if I can help it as I'm hoping to move to Zen/Cannonlake and DDR4 as soon as there available. Anyway I thought that was it all fixed but I went back to Fallout 4 and the Far Harbor DLC after a break and found the same issue as before, Nothing else is affected though. It masy be the game itself, It may be the drivers or it may be something else, I think I'll put a ticket in just incase.
