has anyone come across this before or can shed some light i would be gratefull

Basically i have unaccountable wireless connections to my asus rt-n66u router, im running latest firmware with stong passwords

As APM said, you need to check if they are just available SSIDs in your area (your Asus router does a site survey to help determine the best channel(s) to use) or if they are actual people connected.

Enable MAC filtering if you're that bothered
