Hi everyone,

I hope some kind soul can help me with my weird issue with this router - RT N66U from Asus.

I bought this router with high expectations because of the reviews i've read on the net. The idea is to use it as my main Router for my home network and hope i see some good performance. Unfortunately i've seen the opposite.

I have a 150,000 Kbit/s Fibre Optic Broadband. When i test my connection using the the supplied router from my Cable Provider i get around 120,000 to 130,000 Kbit/s from speedtest.net.

However, when I turn the supplied router into modem only and plug in the RT-N66U to act as the main Router I only get 25,000 Kbit/s??

Am i missing something?? The RT-N66U is running this firmware 3.0.0.4.354

Thanks in advance.

Why are you using 2 routers??

Why not plug the asus into the bt fibre modem and use the asus as your main router.

Im using the same router myself and im getting great speeds.....73mb down and 20mb up.

Havent bothered unpacking the supplied router that plusnet sent me.

he is using one in modem mode, which is what a lot of people do if they want to use a powerful 3rd party router.

there's something wrong in the setup, is the ethernet cable 1000MB and not 100MB, etc?

check all cables, and try other cables out and re-test.

make sure your using wired and now wireless when testing speeds.

I dont know, i just think it complicates things and could be the cause of his slow speeds.

Hi Yas786,

As mentioned by Psycho Sonny the supplied router is in modem only mode when im using the RT N66U.

Also i don't have a separate modem from my cable provider. The supplied router has the built in modem.

THanks

Hi Psycho Sonny,

In deed there is something wrong but i don't where yet. I've tried using different cables. I even tried using cat6 on all but still no luck.

What do you mean by is the cable 1000MB and not 100MB?

Thanks

You can get slower ethernet cables that are limited to just under 100Mb.

Hi kona786,

Thanks for the explanation. The cable I used connecting the supplied router to the RT N66U is Cat6. Is there also limitations regarding speeds on the cat6 cables?

Yep 10gbips so if you are using Cat6 then thats not your problem. Are all the ports gig ports on the now modem or has it just got one gig port just make sure it's connected to the gig port hope that helps

Hi Enigma123,

Thanks for the reply and explanation. The Modem/Router is Thomson TWG870U. According to the manual, all ethernet ports are 10/100/1000 capable.

Mmm is their anyway of telling for sure? Turn off any Qos you have on the modem.

I'll check this when i get home later. I'm at work at present.

But since i didn't actually touched any settings on the supplied router (except disabling the switch mode setting to off) I doubt the QoS is even enabled. but ill confirm later to make sure.

Thanks

if its in modem only mode, then there will be zero routing done by the modem, it will simply be a gateway / access point.

the problem lies in either the connection between the modem and the router or in the router itself.

if you have updated the firmware of the router do a factory reset, this will help clear cache / ram of old data which may be incompatible with newer firmwares.

if your using cat 6 cable between all devices then cabling should not be the fault, if you are unsure whether or not a cable is indeed cat 6, replace said cable with a cat 6 one.

are you connecting to the router by wireless or wired when running the speed test? you have to be hard wired when running speed tests.

Ahh right ok, sorry i just assumed that all fibre connections, the modem is supplied by BT. I had mine put in recently and had an engineer come round and fit a new faceplate plus the white bt openreach modem which i have then connected to my Asus router.

The latest firmware is recently installed. I installed it thinking the old firmware is the culprit, but unfortunately it was the wrong assumptions.

I also tried shutting down the supplied modem/router for 10 mins to sort of refresh it. But still no luck when everything restarted.

As per the cables, all cables are all purchased at the-same time, therefore I am quite confident they are all cat6.

I will do what you suggested to factory reset the RT N66U and see if it makes a difference.

I'll post an update tonight. Thanks again for your input.

By the way, I always use Ethernet cables when running the test.

I thought i'd update everyone who helped me in figuring this out.

Before I decided to factory reset the RT N66U, i thought i run another test, but this time, I decided to use my Laptop from work which runs Windows 7 Professional. And boom there it goes.

I did 4 test, from different servers from the surrounding areas, and one server in Germany. And the results are below.

Test 1

Test 2

Test 3

Test 4

So to sum it up, its the stupid windows 7 home and windows 8 that is causing the slow down.

Is there a way to fix this in these versions of Windows?

No differences WRT Windows home/pro versions. It's not this. Tell us about your non work laptop or desktop you were using to test the speed.

Well if one device works normally now and the other devices used to work normally with the old router, I suggest running a final test on all 3 machines from 4 different servers making a note of the speeds and then return to the old router and do the same. There is no reason why it shouldn't be working. Did you go ahead with the factory reset?
