Right I was reading up on the ac68u and it said it could be used as a media server with out the need for a nas, by plugging hdd's into the router, anyone got any experience of this that can advise?

Thanks

I think you can just access them over the network as a SAMBA or FTP kind of share. Dont think it will do anythink like run plex or anything.

You can run a DLNA server off of it, however it won't be very good. Will do the basic duties, nothing more.

I'd seriously look at a NAS or even a dedicated PC (depending on what will be served).

I had my RT-AC68U acting as a DLNA server for a while, and found it generally pretty decent. However, I did find that it occasionally just dropped out of being visible to the network - the media server element, not the whole router - and this only seemed to be fixable by rebooting the router. Ultimately, this was frustrating, and so I no longer use this feature.
I never really got to the bottom of the issue; could have been the 2.5" external drive I was using entering power save (was powered over USB from the router)? I tried various firmwares without managing to fully resolve......that said, the torrent server never fails, and that is using the same external HDD
