Been having a job trying to get a usb drive to spin down when idle on this router. I have an old generic USB2 3.5" caddy and a similarly cheapo USB3 2.5" caddy. I've tried a WD and a Toshba SATA drive in the USB2 caddy, and a Samsumg Spinpoint laptop drive in the USB3 caddy, and no matter what I do the drives will not spin down after being left idle for a long time.

I then tried the latest Merlin firmware for this router which specifically adds a function to add a spin down timer to the router, but this doesn't seem to have any affect either.

So, I'm looking for anyone who has this router, with or without the Merlin firmware, who has a USB3 caddy and drive which 100% spins down when idle.

Failing that, are people happy to leave say a laptop 2.5" permanently on when used in situations like this? I rather like the idea of having a DNLA server going, but gut feeling is that it shouldn't be running 24/7 to save drive life.

Leaving a drive running 24/7 wouldn't normally be an issue (ignoring noise and power consumption). Presumably it'll spend most if it's life idle rather than actively reading/writing?

Its more the spindle motor I'm bothered about. I certainly wouldn't want to leave a 7200 rpm 3.5" running all the time, especially when there must be a way to run these with proper spin down timers.
