I haven't had this router long but its getting a lot warmer than the dirty Super Hub from Virgin. Does this router tend to get warmer purely because its a better router? It doesn't feel dangerously warm, just noticeably warmer.

Yes, they are warmer. Party it's better specs (faster CPU, more RAM etc), partly the smaller packaging and nicer case. If you've got a router, chances are your Superhub is in modem mode, so it's doing a lot less and so running cooler.

To use a car analogy (as is tradition):

Some engines run best at 80 C, some at 120 C. The hotter ones aren't necessarily better engines, it's just the way they're designed.

I'm sure you can check CPU usage and temperatures etc within the control panel - what's that saying?

They do run warmer than other routers though, so not necessarily something to be worried about.

Thanks guys, i figured it most likely was OK but i wanted to get some feedback just to be sure.

Not sure how to check the temperatures tbh, looked in all the options and can't seem to find it. I might have missed it but i can only see that my CPU goes from 1% to 4% at the most and the RAM is just 54Mb used 181Mb free.

If you run Merlin or one of the forks, you get a nice temp graph so you can use to stop overclocking it too far by ramping up the transmit power or cpu speed. The engineering samples of the router came with a fan, but Asus ended up going with passive cooling when they went into production to make it quieter and use less power.
