My old bios 1902 ran my ram at set speed 3400 xmp no problems and now ive put the latest on the asus website 2220 I can only get me ram stable at 3200 and xmp no longer works so I'm trying to go back to the older bios installed on a formated usb drive Fat32 but it says this is not a bios file.
Any ideas on how I can fix this.

My Z77 Sabertooth has Crash Free BIOS. Pretty sure your Z170 will be the same.

Have you tried flashing to the older BIOS version this way ?

One tip, get ya sen a USB drive which has an LED and flashes when in use. Then if you do use Crash Free you will be able to tell when the process is finished.

As for formatting the USB drive, I always use DISKPART under Command Prompt to format a drive for this type of job.

Did you extract the .cap file from the download compressed file ?

Yes my motherboard has Crash Free BIOS tried that and nothing all my usb sticks have leds on them,as for the bios file ive done what iv always done download the bios from the asus site and use WinRAR to extract it ,cut and move it to the drive go in bios point to the usb with the bios and update it.

This is how the bios reads.

The Crash Free BIOS will only read the files short name. You will need,

"BRenamer"

Just a little app from Asus. Put the renamer.exe in a folder then copy the .cap file into that folder. Then simply drop the .cap file onto the .exe and it renames it. This file should then be read by Crash Free BIOS.

Ok mate I'll try that tomorrow,if that don't work I'll be stumped.
This system is running fine it just bothers me that I can't put the older Bois on.

Also, you probably know but worth a mention, the Crash Free BIOS only works on a certain USB port.
