Asus Silent Square Evo Cooler driving me mad

I have the above cooler purchased from OC.

I fitted it to my mobo (Abit IP35 Pro XE).

When I powered up, the cooler (blue lights) lit up and the fan turned.

Not for long though.........

After a few minutes it was obvious that something was wrong as I could hear the fan struggling and when I put my fingers on the cooler, I could feel the vibration of it struggling. The mobo alarm came on and shortly powered itself down. I tried plugging it into a few of the other fan connectors on my mobo, but always the same result.

I went back to the cooler that came with my Q6600 and it works fine.

Yesterday when I was about to pack the cooler up and return it for checking and replacement under RMA, I decided to plug it into an aux fan connection and it worked. I left it connected and running all night and it was still running without problems this morning.

So, I decided to re-fit the Asus cooler and guess what!

The damn thing was struggling again and the mobo alarm was sounding.

Has anyone got any idea what could be wrong?

I will have to return it under RMA, but I am concerned that if OC just plug it into an aux connector, the fan will seem to be ok.

This is really baffling me.

Try plugging it into the AUX again, stand the cooler on little block (to simulate the CPU) and apply downward pressure on the legs. Maybe it's distorting the casing and causing the fan to bind....

Good idea and I will try that, but the fan although a little wobbly doesn't seem to have been pressing against anything. I did try moving the fan around as much as I could with a finger.

It did work perfectly with my old mobo.

Well, I have tried that and there is no way anything could be pressing against the fan and stopping it from running.

Even if something was able to touch the fan, it would only touch the fan surrounding still allowing the fan within to run.

This has me totally baffled.

Does anyone else have this combo of mobo and cooler running perfectly well?

It ran fine on my old Asrock mobo.

I have it in front of me now connected to an aux connector and running perfectly. ??????

Just a thought......... :D

When I connect the cooler to an aux connector, it is only on 3 pins rather than the four if connected to the cpu fan connector.

As the fan runs ok on the aux connector, could the problem be with the fourth wire which I believe is the contol wire?

There are no obvious faults with any of the wiring or plug.

Desperately looking for answers....... as I don't want to send it back on RMA only for OC to say there is no problem. There obviously is a problem, but what?

4 pin is a PWM Fan which can be controlled via BIOS. Sounds like your fan isnt getting enough volts or RPM from the motherboard. Go into your BIOS and put all fans on auto/full volts/rpm and test again.

As above. The problem you have is the fan not revieving enough power, which in turn is alarming your mobo as you have most likely set the board to power off in the case of a cpu fan fail fault.

You can still use the CPU fan header but you will need to turn off any AUTO settings and set the fan to 100% instead. OR turn off the CPU fan header alarm and plug it in a different header.

I have made what I believe are the correct adjustments in bios and left the computer off overnight to make it as cool as possible. (It doesn't take long before auto switch off kicks in) I could not see any option to increase the voltage for the fans, but did increase minimum fan speed to 90% (max lower setting). I assume this is really the same. (more volts = more speed?)

I have just tested it briefly with the cooler in question not fitted but plugged into the cpu connector and it seemed to be ok. (I did have a cooler in situ over the cpu, but had disconnected the fan plug)

I shall now reinstall the Asus cooler for the fourth time and keep my fingers crossed.

I am happy to say that the cooler is running normally in situ now.

It was obviously a 'lack of power' problem.

Thanks to those that offered advice.

Now to cancel the RMA.
