Am building a rig for my nephew based on a AMD Athlon 880K and found an old Asus Silent Square Evo in the loft. Was wondering if this would be good enough to cool this chip as would save a bit of cash.

From what I remember it was a pretty good cooler in its day.

not sure if it would fit the socket... According to Asus website it fits:
AMD AM3/AM2+/AM2/754/939/940

The AMD 880K is Socket FM2.

Yeah but the backplate and frame fit, the cooler fits, think the only difference between AM3 and FM2 is the internal pin layout on the chips. Just wondering if its man enough for the job

I've got an old Asus Golden Axe cooling an AM3+ FX4100 OK, so I reckon the Silent Square Evo should cope with the Athlon, they're the same 95w TDP I think.. It didn't cope well with an FX8350 though.

You could always try it ? (Does the 880k use the wraith cooler as stock, that may actually be better).
