hi, just emailed asus support hoping for some help on an out of warranty 29 290. the fans have slowwed down and one got stuck and has come off. still a great card and a shame to throw it away for one broken fan. and idea if they are helpful or not in these situations??

I can't help with what Asus is like but one option is to add an all-in-one to it, It was a popular 290/290x DIY mod.

EDIT1: Alright maybe not popular as such but well known,

EDIT2: Okay, okay maybe it's not that well known but I did hear from my Dogs barber that a fella with a Shih-Tzu knew a fella that heard you can do it.....

Not helpful, hell they are a nightmare with stuff that's in warranty. Best you can expect is for them to fix it and charge you for it.

You can get replacement fans off ebay.

yeh but they are like 50 quid. plus postage from usa. i have another 290 with an accelero on it. i think i'll change that to the asus card and i have an msi cooler i think i can fit to the other card.

Almost certainly the best plan of action. Asus support is pretty much non existent.

I have been trying to return an asus product which has 3 years warranty but they refuse to do anything and keep insisting i return it to the retailer, best part is the retailer only handles returns directly for a year...

Yeah they are shocking. A few options to consider

1. Look for a damaged card to get the cooler off
2. See if you can buy just the part from Asus and costs
3. Buy an AIO and up your clock as well as keeping it more quite and cool
4. Go full custom cooling

The AIO and custom loops will work out between £100-£200 depending on what you go for.

NZXT for instance do a bracket for an AIO for £25 ish and then a cooler itself would be £70-£100 depending on model.

An aftermarket air cooler is the Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV that retails around £60-70

Hope they help. I can't link them as OCUK don't appear to stock the Arctic but seems worth it from reviews. All show the compatibility fine for the R9 290

i put the arctic accelero on it and it's working great. however i now have a reference asus 290x. i fitted an msi gaming cooler to it which seems to fit but the card went strainght up to 95 and climbing. that card had the accelero on and was fine then

I wish someone would clear this up once and for all. Although saying that I would have thought if you had bought a product from a store with 3 year warranty that's who should be handling it as that's who you have a contract with.

If temps are going up that fast then the plate isn't making proper contact with the die, you would probably be able to see the difference in temps if you held the HSF tighter to the card with your hand.

The product has a 3yr warranty which would tell me know matter where i got it the warranty is with asus. No idea though myself as it seems to be one thing one day and another, another day

Deffo sounds like the heatsink isn't making contact with the die. "some" coolers need a shim to installed between the die and heatsink due to the height of the die surround. You'll need to check this with summat like a teel rule or anything with a flat straight edge laid across the surround, if theres a gap between the rule and the die, you'll need a shim, if not, then the heatsink just needs refitting.

Asus warranty is dealt with through the place of purchase for the whole warranty term. It's always been this way and any retailer who sells their products should know that. If they are telling you that they only support the warranty for the first year they are fobbing you off.

Ok nice to know, thanks.
