Is there any reason as to why i cant overclock my card even slightly, raise by 10-15mhz and i get errors on vantage or crashes. even auto tune on ccc does a small overclock then fails. tried the bundled smart doctor as well and thats as bad, any idea's?

Use MSI afternurner, if you're getting artifacts with just a small overclock then you may have a duff clocker, try raising the voltage some.

yep thats whats happening, isnt the selling point of the voltagfe tweak one the overclocking ability? ive added a little more voltage using smart doctor that comes with it and still didnt make a difference, what is the highest voltage i could go for?

Use the MSI and not that asus junk that came with the card, try 1.2v and work your way up to stability, if it's a duff core you may still get nowhere.

TBH even the worst clocking HD5870s should be able to hit ~875mhz on the core without having to touch the voltage.

As Raven Suggests download MSI afterburner and use that instead of the Asus software.

Afterburner will shown the current voltage the card is using. Perhaps we have a case of the card not having the correct voltage even at stock speeds (too low). I can't remember the stock voltage off the top of my head (no longer have my HD5870) but IIRC it was around 1.1v.

For what it's worth my old HD5870VT hit 935mhz on stock volts and 1000mhz on 1.3v.

I never use Asus supplied software as it's usually a pile of junk. Using afterburner on my Asus 5850 and am running at 1000/1250 with 1.2v. :D

what is the max safe 24/7 voltage recommended by Asus?

Also, as a key selling point of the asus is its voltage tweak and overclockability i'd say that could be grounds for an exchange/refund.

yeah you would think so, The place i got it from would like to test it and if a fault is found they would replace it but would take between 5-7 working days and i would pay for postage costs with a courier of there choice, if they decsie otherwise ive spent money for no reason so im trying to persist really and get something out of it. not a great need for an overclock on it but i just want to! its the reason i went for this one really
