I have the following parts

Asus WS X299 Sage /10g (0402 bios)
i9 7900X
Corsair Vengeance 64gb DDR4 3600mhz (4x 16gb)
Corsair AX860

The memory is populated in A1/B1/C1/D1, every time I enable XMP profile in the BIOS and reset I get a bd error code and no signal from the monitor which would indicate an issue with the CPU talking to the memory

If I reset the machine I do get a signal but get a warning at POST saying "the system has posted in SAFE mode", I can then go back into the BIOS, if exit and restart I get the bd error code again with no signal

The only way I can get it stable is to disable XMP profile and run the memory at 2133mhz

Any ideas why?

Possibly because your RAM is not 100% compatible with that board or perhaps one of the sticks is faulty. I've had same problem in the past and even other way round, ie wont boot unless I use XMP. Yet buy another set of different RAM and it works fine.

Check for a BIOS update too.

Had pretty much the exact same setup with the same issue using some Corsair RAM but it was 128GB 8x16GB modules, tried various combinations and finally just put in some random Crucial we had laying around in, and that worked OK. E-mailed our contact at Asus and they basically were useless saying it's not on the QVL list. Ended up with some 3000MHz modules in the end, still 128GB, and they were fine, still not on the QVL mind you, at least not the version we received.

The XMP option only has Profile 1 and disable, so I left it on disable and tried setting the frequency manually in stages

3400mhz seems to be stable
3467mhz booted but I got BSOD after POST
3600mhz I got the BD error code

Have you increased the vccsa and vccio? 64Gb at 3000Mhz is fine at stock/auto but 3200Mhz+ you need to increase those voltages. Increase to 1.1 should be fine at 3200Mhz but you will have to keep increasing to get stable at 3600Mhz. Only issue is that it will increase packet temps so delid and heavy duty watercooling is essential.

Great motherboard. Really solid, feature rich but pricey... Well mine wasn't.. ;)

Yep, unfortunately that's ASUS's go to response. If its not on the QVL list its not supported and down to you to diagnose. Problem with that is that the QVL states very specific version/bom that you will be VERY lucky to get from etailers as often they do not list the version/bom. I tend to be able to get a decent quantity of sample products and do my own testing as its generally not feasible to get specific modules for these boards in large quantities for commercial purposes.

Cpu is overclocked too high
Or u need to get waaaaaaaaaaay better cooling
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT MAN, btw I have the same problem here with my Asus x299 deluxe + i9-7980XE. I've succesfully oc my ram(kingston hyper furyx) from 2400mhz(base) to 3200 stable but going further will end in a BD Code, replying if a figure it out how to solve it.
