Hi all,
New to the forums and looking for a bit of laptop advice before I take the plunge. I'll try to give as much info as I can but if you need more by all means shout out if I miss anything out and thank you in advance for any advice you're able to give
I'm looking to buy a laptop for home use. It'll be shared between my wife and I and she will probably be doing a bit of work on it, with the Office suite her primary source of apps, but will require some video calls and chat, etc, perhaps with a bit of design (certainly nothing advanced or intensive) and checking on websites. For myself, it'll be the same, but I wouldn't mind adding Visual Studio and SQL, etc on the machine and learning some coding and development work, as well as the usual browsing, watching Netflix and possibly streaming sports too. I should add this will NOT be used for gaming. I'm not a PC/laptop gamer (sorry to disappoint!) but I may whack Theme Hospital on for some classic chillout gaming! But that will be the bulk of it.
In terms of the machines themselves, I've narrowed it down to two (both at the same price and pretty much top end of budget as of now). They are the Acer Swift 3 and the Asus VivoBook X515JA. I'll post the links to them at the bottom of the thread. But I'm looking for your advice on which one to take.
In terms of spec, it probably seems like a no-brainer. The ASUS VivoBook has an i7 (1065G7), with 512Gb hard drive capacity (SSD) and 16Gb RAM (DDR4), while the Swift 3 has an i5 (1135G7), also with 512Gb SSD but half the RAM at 8Gb. So unless I'm missing something, I'd assume most would say go for the VivoBook. However, my question comes in around the processor speed.
The VivoBook (with the higher spec) has a base speed of 1.3GHz (although the spec says it can burst up to 3.9), while the Swift 3 has a base speed of 2.4GHz (up to 4.2GHz).
So in short, would the Swift 3 be worth going for even though it seemingly has a lower spec, but has the higher base speed? Or am I just a fool and I should go for the VivoBook with the higher spec and not worry too much about the processor speed, bearing in mind what the laptop will be primarily used for.
Apologies for the length of the post, and the possible very stupid question, but want to be sure I've got the best I can before I part with my money. Any advice you guys have would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!
