Finally just finishing off my build.

Got everything connected up - just installing my Windows 8.1 from DVD.

It goes through the install up until it reboots and gets to the personalise screen, asking you to select colour and set a PC name then click next.

Problem is, the mouse and keyboard don't work, so I can't get past this.

They work fine in the UEFI / Bios.

Connected them into the USB2 ports rather than 3 - as have seen a few posts around not working in USB3 ports until your in the OS.

Installed the latest BIOS.

Anyone got any idea :-(

idk how you'd get around it other than try with spare kb/mouse

or swap the ssd/hdd to a spare pc/install windows on it but don't activate it and swap the ssd/hdd back to your x99 board and take things from there

Phew - just sorted it :D

Had to disable all the USB3 options, and just leave USB2 support enabled. Its let me get past that now at least anyway lol

I do not no why this happens but sometimes on a new or clean install you get this issue with the usb keyboards and mouse and other times they just work and that is with the bios at defaults. The way I get around the problem is to power down and reboot then windows 8.1 seems to have no problems second time around.

main thing was to be able to get into windows.

Still have a few problems though :-(

Only 12gb of ram showing - when there is 16gb installed.
CPUz reports its running in tri-channel instead of quad - and nothing reported in the C1 slot ( where there is a 4gb stick )
Bios has got the XMP profile ( 2666 ) applied, matching the ram - so that's odd.

Network is also very strange. Won't connect on a 1gb link, drops to 100mb full duplex. Using the same cable on a laptop - 1gb immediately.

Even when its connected on 100mb - after around 10 minutes, it drops out, you see it as if the cables been removed, the LAN light on my switch drops off, then it picks back up a few seconds later.....

Switch the RAM sticks around. Might help.
Try another version of Windows. Windows 10 Technical Preview?

Run the drivers off the disc. Might sort out the LAN issue.

Seems obvious and I'm sure you've already tried it but thought I'd mention it.

I've got the same motherboard/cpu combo and have not had any such issues. I am running only 2 sticks of RAM (2x8GB) rather than 4 but they should all be detected.

Goodluck.

Really odd, just switched C1 and D1 around again ( had done before and didn't do anything ) and now 16gb showing...

Weird, I might not of put it in 100% the first time, but the 2nd time around I definitely did. Oh well, as long as it stays at 16gb i'll be happy.

I've tried the NIC driver from both the Mobo CD - and the one on Asus website, still have the same issue with it only connecting at 100mb. Not a major issue, but its the drop outs that concern me more than anything.

and *fingers crossed* think I might of just sorted the NIC.

Ran the following from a command prompt :

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled

rebooted, NIC was still on auto-detect, picked up 1gb straight away - and so far, no drop outs ( which it would have done normally by now )
