after a hour or two of hassle, ive figured out how to get the game working good..

I plug my headset into the Z5500 panel, and at first with the new xonar i used optical cable and it was fine with 5.1 movies etc (excellent quality)

However, i opened BF2/FEAR/Grid and it sounded real strange, (before the panel turned 5.1 into headphones)

Basically it sounded as your trying to listen to 5.1 film on 5.1 system but youve put the speakers to 2.0 stero, ( so sound is in the wrong places)..

Instead i used the 3 cable setup i had before (analog) and set it to 5.1 = everything is good..

however gaming is still the same as described above...

setting the analog out to headphone (without changing any cables) routs the headphone socket through the z5500 like if youve pluged it in to the card directly.

And YEA!, sound is now excellent, and i can hear people before they even join the server..

unplug headset and switch it to 5.1 again, and your good :D.

hope that helps someone

I use Z-5500, Senn 595's and a Xonar DX, I never had any issues...

All you have to do is use the front panel socket, this way I can change between speakers and headphones instantly, I use the speakers for my TV as that is plugged into my PC and used for films/tv, headphones are for the PC.

I set the channels to 6 and when I want to use surround sound stuff I just put on Dolby Headphone, never had a problem with missing channels and never felt like I had sounds in the wrong places. I set all my games to 5.1 and have always had a feel of surround sound.

Also don't use the front panel of the Z-5500 for headphones, it's always gonna sound worse than direct connection, plus you can't keep control over the volume as good as for some reason you have to turn the volume to full whack when you use headphones plugged into the Z-5500, even then it's not as loud as direct connection.
