I just received my Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm headphones and enabled Exciter mode which is rated for 64 Ohm and above. With that mode enabled i've had to reduce the system volume to about 30% in order to get a comfortable sound level. With my old Corsair Vengeance 1400 gaming headset I had VOIP mode (32 ohm) enabled with system volume at 100%, i then used the volume control on the headset.

I'm a complete audiophile noob and this is my first non-gaming headset so if anyone has any other advice for configuring my Xonar DG sound card i'd really appreciate it.

Whichever is more comfortable for you. If you'd rather a lower gain setting then have the system volume set higher, then there's no reason why you shouldn't do that. Although the Exciter setting says for 64 and above Ohms and the headphones are 80 Ohms, there's nothing to say that you need to have that setting.

Different people like varying volume levels, so someone else may prefer Exciter mode with even higher volume. As long as it sounds good to you, then that's what is important. :)
