Hi guys,

I recently bought the AKG 702's based on a previous thread and I love them!

Previously I had my speakers on the soundcard and the headset on the onboard sound.

I have now switched this around as from what I understand the AKG's need a soundcard with headphone amp.

Is it possible to have both speakers and headphones on my sound card so that I don't have to keep enabling one and disabling the other each time I load up CS rather than listening to music/watching a film?

you should be able to plug the speakers into the back of the card and plug the headphones into the front of your case as long as you've connected it up. You can then use the auto sensing feature for the front panel audio.

I'd be very surprised if the DGX is able to drive the AKG K702s adequately, they require a lot of current to sound at their best and the DGX isn't really up to that.

Ah bugga.

What sound card do I need then?

Try looking for a 2nd hand STX between £50~£70.

I still love mine to bits :D But you'd still have to switch between "2 speakers" and "headphones" on drop-down box at the Asus control panel.

Yep, the STX is the one to go for as even the Sound Blaster Z doesn't have enough poke to push the K702 properly.

If you do get an STX, get short extension cable to leave plugged into the rear headphone port. That will leave you with a headphone socket on your desk and you can leave the speakers plugged in all the time, though you will have to use the STX control panel to switch between the two but once you are used to it it will only take a second or two.

Don't know if you guys are aware of it, but you can use a program called xonar switch from the guys who make the Uni drivers to switch between inputs using hotkeys on your keyboard. You can set up different profiles using different settings and use hotkeys to switch between them. I used to use it when I had an STX a while ago, saves messing around with wires and having to go into the control panel to do it :D

By STX do you mean the Asus Xonar Essence STX II?

I really know nothing when it comes to audio stuff other than I like better than ipod headphones and cheap £20 logitech speakers ha.

When I read my DGX had a headphone amp I assumed it was enough to run any headphones.

Are there any figures I need to know about when getting a soundcard if I cannot find a STX?

Also, thank you. I'll look into these if I get myself a soundcard that works with my new headphones :)

It looks like I've bought a super car but can only afford cheap Chinese tyres haha

My STX arrived Friday, just got it installed and it sounds so good! Thank you for the help guys.

Its easy to switch between my headphones/speakers with the software as well :)

Glad you like it. :)

Even though I also have external DACs and headphone amps for listening to music I am still very impressed with my STX and it certainly holds it's own against it's "hi fi" competition.
