Asus Xonar Essence STX listening optons

I have this card playing through my Denon AVR via Optical out , I am trying to get sound through headphones but not having much luck. I have selected headphones in the Asus control panel and connected headphones into the back of the card but not getting any sound .Do i have to disconnect the Optical output to get headphones to work ?

No both should work simultaneously.

What have you got selected in the Windows sound options?

You may have Xonar Essence SPDIF passthrough selected as default. You want just Xonar Essence selected.
