Asus XT12 crash when downloading at full speed

Wonder if any router/network gurus can offer me any support.

I have 2x XT12 and 1x XT8 on a gigabit connection setup as a mesh configuration. I am using the 3rd wifi band as a dedicated wifi backhaul, all node connections are strong.

The issue is that when I (or anyone else in the house) downloads (or updates) a game and the download speed 'maxes out', the router simply crashes and reboots.
Normal browsing, wfh, streaming, youtube, etc. works without a hitch and for days (if no superfast downloads are initiated), its only when something downloads at the max speed it crashes.
The router logs don't seem to show anything obvious and I've tried various firmware without any resolution (I'm currently on the latest Asus official).

For example, my son downloaded BG3 from Steam the other night and he said the router crashed twice during the download.

I can live with this, but its frustrating.

Any suggestions?

I had the same issue in the past, also running 2x XT12s but with 2x AX92Us as a mesh.

It seems to have resolved itself weirdly, although I did flash the main router with the Merlin firmware after hearing good things about it. But can't correlate the timings off the top of my head to know if that was the fix.

I also had the same issue when using qbittorrent, download speed would go from 100mb/s to 0, internet would almost "cut", and then back up to 100mb/s, rinse and repeat. When I changed to a different torrent program (transmission) then no issues.

Disclaimer obviously I only use torrents for perfectly legal file sharing purposes etc.

Try Merlin firmware on it.

Personally wouldn’t touch Asus for networking with a bargepole.

What do you use instead out of curiosity?

My house is fairly spread out, and all internal walls are solid brick which destroys signal transmission. The BT Homehub was garbage, and I know I needed at least 4 "nodes" to spread wifi decently throughout the house. But I didn't want to go for an Access Point solution as that only gives me wifi, whereas I can use each of the Asus AiMesh routers as both wifi APs and switches since they have Ethernet ports on them. So each one supplies wifi and a couple of wired connections to devices in that part of the house.

Ubiquiti/UniFi seems great if you only just want to distribute out wifi.

I use UniFi and get over 1 Gbit pretty much everywhere in the house. However Vendor A would have the same issues as Vendor B with regards wireless and walls etc, as all wireless APs/devices etc are bound by the same laws.

Unifi can also be used to bridge Ethernet. Some APs have two Ethernet ports which can be used to connect none-wifi devices to the network.

Nothing will beat actually running Ethernet cable round the house though, if you can/have the allowance to do it.

Did your son see the router crash? Not sure where they are placed if they are visible to you and your son, did the lights go red for example before it rebooted? Or is he just assuming it was the router that crashed?

Might be a good idea to backup the config, then do a factory reset. Maybes just then start with the x2 XT12 units and then introduce the XT8 if all seems stable. I used to have x2 XT12 units and had very little issue with them.

But failing that if they contine to crash/reboot I'd log a ticket if under warranty to try and get replacement(s).
