Asus Z97-K, won't boot with graphics in, help!

New build, the Asus Z97-K boots fine and displays through the onboard hdmi output to my monitor.

MSI HD 7770 GHz Edition 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

When I slot this in (not forgetting to plug in its own power source) the machine does not boot, the keyboard/mouse don't light or become active, the display comes on and then shuts down due to "no source" The cpu spins up, no beeps.
Tried the card in both slots.

Any ideas?

First thoughts are bios or underpowered psu (which is a Antec VP450P 450W '80 Plus' Continuous Power Supply) but my research shows that a 450 should fine.

I think you should start at a BIOS update.

I would point to the graphics card initially. Can you maybe try the card in another PC to confirm it works and has no issues. Then we can then narrow down to the card itself or something on your setup.

I had a very similar experience once, after lots of head ache ended up being the cards were fine my pcie motherboard interface was faulty.

Hope that's not the case for you though.

try cmos reset? By coincidence i have the same board and i had the same problem (ie no display but everything else coming on)

Could be the PSU. Not confirmed as haswell compatible here,
