I've been looking for a compact phone. The Zenfone 8 is under 6 inches, but notoriously hard to find for a good price in the UK. Before pulling the trigger, I discovered the Zenfone 9 trailer had been leaked, and they're sticking with the same size. I quite like the look of the large camera rings, flat surface, and the power button fingerprint sensors should perform better than an in-screen one. I just hope availability isn't a problem, and the price isn't insane. If it really is €900, I probably won't get it for a year.

Another compact phone I was considering was the Pixel 6a. At 6.2" it's a little bigger. But at £400, when the Pixel 6 with better specs goes for £435, you'd really have to value the slightly smaller size. I'm not sure I can classify it as truly compact, when the Pixel 5/4a exist. I considered a Pixel for Graphene OS, but I realised that only the Pixel 6 and beyond get 5 years of updates. I could've got a 5/4a, but they would be obsolete by next year. What other compact phones should I be looking at?

Yeah it looks pretty great.

Maybe they'll market it properly this time they do a UK launch.

The Asus Zenfone 8 was one of the only compact Android phones last year and now we’re finally getting some official details on the Zenfone 9 which leaked in a product video. The device will bring a 5.9-inch Samsung AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a punch hole cutout in the left corner.

The device will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and is armed with a 4,300 mAh battery. The back features a dual camera setup with the same 50MP Sony IMX766 camera sensor found on the ROG Phone 6 series though this time around Asus is also bringing a six-axis gimbal module for video stabilization.

I hope they have fixed the random bricking problem of the 8.

Others to look at

S22, same size as Pixel 5
Sony 10 IV (taller with mega battery life)
iPhone 13 Mini

Each of them has their pros and cons

In the S22 price range, no wireless charging but has a headphone socket and has an excellent battery

My take away as its to expensive for the camera performance on offer.

And only offers a minimum of 2 years software updates. They need to guarantee 4 years imo.

Otherwise make it £600.

8+Gen1 is so overkill here. 888 would have done just fine. Better cam and updates all for 600.

Deals are out!

Bump on this thread. Sorry didn't know there was one and went back to Aug.

My question if anyone has any idea, as the updates is only for 2 years. Can a custom firmware be added or installed from the help of the XDA developers? I assume OTA will be then killed so will have to do it manually.

Custom firmware is basically replacing the operating system. Not exactly the same but it's like replacing Windows with Linux (although much more closer to replacing Linux with another distro). You won't get OTAs any more since it's no longer Asus's stock ROM, but depending on the developer, the custom ROM may have OTA support for their own updates.

A quick look on XDA bootloader unlocking doesn't seem that hard to do so I would imagine it will eventually get some custom ROMs later in the phone's lifetime.

thanks, at £600 it does seem expensive for me but then I think I only paid about £400 or so for my Huawei back in the day from HK.
Might see if prices drop after a couple of months or see if someone wants to flog theirs on ebay lol

Yes my zenfone 8 had this problem, when I was driving in Paris of all places! To say I was annoyed is an under statement. I lost all my lectures and presentation which was in the phone. I had no sat nav to make it for my presentation, it was a massive inconvenience for me. That is when I learnt the value of having another phone in the car just in case, which shouldn't be, but when you use a zenfone, just be aware and have a backup phone!
