Hey Guys,

So yesterday I replaced my ageing DFI LanParty Motherboard and P4 Prescott 3.2ghx Gear with a Nice Asus P5N32-E-SLi 680 and an Intel E6600 Dual Core CPU.

Current system Spec.

Intel Core2 Duo E6600
Asus P5N32-E-SLI 680
OcUK NVidia Geforce 8800 GTX 768 (Fitted With a Thermalright HR-03)
SoundBlaster Audigy
1 GB Balistix DDr2 5300 Ram (2 x 512mb)
1 GB Kingston DDr2 Value Ram (2 x 512mb)
650watt Dual SLi PSU (3 Days Old)
Thermaltake 'Shark' Tower with 120mm front and 120mm rear.
22" Dell E228WFP Monitor
Logitech G15 v.2 Keyboard
Microsoft Sidewinder Mouse
Windows Vista 32bit

All running current drivers as of yesterday. Vista is upto date including SP1.

Had nothing but problems since building it, I am thinking its down to ram but will explain a little.

In Windows, Adobe Photoshop CS3 etc its Fine. As soon as I start gaming then thats when the problems start.

Can play COD4 Single Player for about 10-15 minutes then it locks solid with nothing but a Sound loop. Resetting the pc is the only way to get going again. CSS/Portal etc work fine. Runnin TF2 I am getting approx 2-5 fps if it does'nt crash within 2 minutes.

Currently running the mb with Setup Defaults loaded to boot.

I am sure its the ram as its getting pretty hot etc. Have tried to change settings in the bios for the ram but end up only getting as far as the first Ai boot screen with 'Hit delete to enter setup' if I set the ram to 3-3-3-12 as found on the net for this ram. I have tried removing each make of ram, i.e. Only running the Crucial Ballistix and so on but still no different.

What are the best settings for my current setup as far as ram is concerned. Should I ditch the ram and get some newer ram that would be better suited to my board (Please advise what would be a good but not too expensive ram)
Also with my CPU, what can that be run at. Its got a massive Zalman HeatSink/Fan combo on the rarely seems to go above 35 degree's.

Thanks in Advance Guys, would really like to get this sorted asap.

Regard

Chris

Will give it a go mate, Thanks.

mm Will get some new ram I think mate. Just dumped Vista and reinstalled XP as well. No going to install/Update my games. Will report back on how I get on.

Thanks :)

I had to force voltages for my Geil ram on that board, to be honest though with the quality of the rest of your setup i'd probably just buy 4gb ram in matched pairs as it's so cheap atm. i think there might be an ocz 4gb deal in deal of the week atm.

Thanks Dan, Will check out the store and see what I can get. Currently having lots of weird problems. The latest being that when I insert a cd (The Orange Box) my system freezes. God knows whats going on tbh but am at my witsends :(

EDIT

Just tried to up the voltage on the current ram and got a BSOD within seconds of hitting Windows. Kind of confirms the ram tbh as this is all I changed in the bios and I get the blue screen crap.

On the BSOD was:

Windows Stopped, Blar Blar

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - (Driver Related Maybe)

blar, Blar

*** STOP: 0X000000D1, C0X3BC888C2, 0X00000002, 0X00000001, 0XB622DA50

If that mean anything to anyone.

Thanks again for any help, Regards

Chris

You will thank yourself later for returning that motherboard if possible - and getting a P35 or similiar... those 680 boards are nothing but trouble.

You might get it more stable by putting some extra cooling on the northbridge - but in the end that board will be nothing but trouble.

I have similar set up , also had problems running the ram @ 1066 when overclocked , at stock it was fine.

Currently running ram @ 1000Mhz , CPU @ 3.2Ghz (1440 x 9) , NB volts @ 1.4v , Ram volts @ 2,25v (OCZ PC8500 2Gb SLI Kit).

Have had it running @ 3.6Ghz (400 x 9) and ram @ 800Mhz it would do menial tasks ok but anything putting a strain on cpu or ram it would re-boot. Quite happy with 3.2GHz for now.

mm thanks for that Morpheus. Think I have given this setup enough of my time (3 Days) and thats just to try and get it stay on without BSOD, no oeverclocking at all.

Pretty certain my current ram wont take too much abuse and also seem to have the problem now that when I reboot it sometimes finds the SATA drives and other times it wont.

Gonna pop along to the store and see whats there ;)

Either add a few quid on and get an X38 based ASUS P5E, or go for a P35 Abit IP35 Pro.

I'd be temped to spend the extra tenner on the x38 board, as £117 is getting to be pretty expensive for a P35 board. You can easily spend under £80 and get a grand P35 based board.

And for 4gb of memory you'd be better looking at a 2x2gb kit such as this.
