Hi, this may end up being a bit long winded but I'll try to keep it as concise as I can. Please, I need to try and understand what is going on.

I have a system, the full specs are:

AMD PII 965BE
Gigabyte MA790XT - UD4P
2x2GB Gskill NQ

Bought about a year ago. The first graphics card I had in there was a Palit GTS250 1GB. Was fine for a while, though admittedly I only ever really gamed in MW2 with it. However, problems began when I started trying to play newer stuff like MoH and Black Ops. Bluescreens and general crashing were the norm. I tried to update the drivers but the newest drivers I could get to just run were 258.96. One one occasion managed to get 260.99 to install but they were extremely unstable, freezes and crashes mainly in desktop. So stuck at 258.96 I swapped for a better PSU to see if that made a difference, it didn't.
So, thinking the gfx card was binned I bought a new graphics card, a GTX460 Super Overclock. I managed to get all drivers up to date and working fine but this time the problem that arose was freezing/lock ups during gaming. At first I thought it might be heat related but the temps were fine.

So, I tried both my GTS250 and GTX460 in seperate machines and they both work perfectly. I have not a had a single crash/freeze/BSOD or general hiccup with either while being used in the other machines.

I tried an ATI 4670 512MB in the aforementioned rig and guess what, it works perfectly. I haven't had a single problem with it. Ok it doesn't require a PSU connector but I don't beleive it's PSU related anyway.

I just can't get my head round it. Is it possible that only ATI cards will work stable with the motherboard. It just seems very odd. Also I hate the feeling that I've got this machine and can'tdo what I wanna do with it. I mean I'm tempted by the 6950 or 480 offer that's on atm but I don't feel like spending 200 quid as it feels like a gamble. If it's motherboard, I can deal with that. It's the not knowing that is grinding me down.

Sorry for rambling on, I hope I've made myself as clear as possible. I just wanna get the issue resolved if I'm honest so I can move on with it.

Cheers, Mike

Hi.

The problems you are having sound like the common symptoms of not enough power going into your cards :\

The 4670 doesn't use as much as the GTS250 or the GT460.
What power supply are you using?

Try testing with another set of RAM too perhaps? Probably a waste of time to do that though, but it couldn't hurt.

It's an XFX XXX 650W modular No competitor links.

The one before that was garbage though, was an Atrix 650W and I could understand that being a problem.

I don't think it's the RAM, I've tested the two modules from this in another machine and tried some other DDR3 modules in this machine. I've ran memtest for a good a while too and no errors reported.

Sorry for the bad link.

I think it's just one of those things I'll have to live with and figure out. Been tempted to just swap out the motherboard as I'm nigh on certain thats the problem. But even then I don't really know for sure. It's a baffling problem, maybe someone has had a similar problem with a similar rig or configuration. Ah well, not the end of the world. Just a right pain in the neck.

Thanks to those who tried to help.

Much appreciated,

Mike
