What an easy fix it turned out to be in the end..

Download 32 bit drivers, open "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Photo Gallery" and run the photo gallery exe.

Forget the ardfry link in my OP that turned out to be just a free trial which I hadn't noticed to start with in my eagerness to post.

The normal 32 bit drivers specific for your camera model for me it was Canon so,

Pretty annoying that a company is taking advantage of charging for something that Canon should really have released for free to begin with.

Either way, the photo gallery workaround is adequate for the moment.
