Basically i'm putting a computr back togeather to do me untill I can afford a full new one, but want to save money over all and buy some parts that I can re-use in my new one.
Now ive lived in a ATA (big ribbon thing_ all my life and not sure what a SATA cable looks like but I cant see any smaller attatchments on the mobo, do a lot of dvd RW and hard-drives now come with a choice of both ATA and SATA or are there like connectors for them?
cheers.

You only get a PATA or SATA connection on a drive, never both so unless you've got a SATA controller on your existing board your either stuck with PATA or you'll need a PCI SATA card. You can get converters but I've never seen anyone rave about them.

DVD and CD drives, as well as hard drives are either SATA or ATA. If you have a pretty old mobo then u may not have any SATA connectors on there.

If u do then they are usually pretty noticable as they are a different colour to the PCB and other things on the mobo.

If you have mainly PATA drives then the Asrock Dual-Vsta or Quad-Vsta boards give you 2xIDE and 4(I think)xSATA connectors for pretty cheap. If you want to go a bit more upper class then the P5N-E Sli gives you 2xIDE and 4 SATA connectors too but can actually overclock. I've had very poor experience with this board though. I'm currently on my fourth as the first three froze and died on me after 5 minutes, 1 day, 2 months respectively. Not exactly the most trustworthy of boards.

poo.
I hate being financially poor :(
I'm in the predicament were I dont have the money for a enw computer, but a need a new one/ upgraded one where I can afford the upgrades but may as well save money and buy the parts I can put onto the new machine.
I'll see what the bank manager (aka my dad) says.

lol
he knows that i get a laptop from the course, even though i cant find any more mention on it online now.
But i want to keep all my crap seperate from my work crap, apart from msn (cant have a machine without msn) and when I transfer stuff over to the (would would be) quad core for rendering.

Tell us what you currently have, then we can look it up. If it's really old (like 4 years +) then it's unlikely to have SATA. I have a ASUS board from about 3 years ago that had SATA-1 ports on it, and my ASUS SLi premium has SATA-2 ports on it.
