Atari to auction all IP piece by piece

After failing to find a buyer for its entire back catalogue, Atari will auction its IP piece by piece.

In January Atari filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and since convened with about 180 potential buyers only to receive 15 unsatisfactory bids for its entire catalogue.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Atari will hold auctions over four days in July, and is seeking a minimum of US$22.2 million (AU$22.9 million) in total.

According to court documents, “The Debtors believe that this type of a targeted bidding process affords the Debtors the best opportunity to market the Assets and maximize the value thereof for the benefit of all stakeholders".

Minimum bids include US$3.5 million (AU$3.6 million) for the Rollercoaster Tycoon franchise, US$1.5 million (AU$1.5 million) for the Test Drive franchise, or US$250,000 (AU$258,325) for Total Annihilation.

Some of Atari’s assets will be sold outside of the auction due to their "minor value".

Total Annihilation minimum bid is just $250K.

I wonder if Chris Taylor would be interested?

Would be great for some places to pick up TA and make a new version, yet somehow stick to how it was originally.

If not for the sims, you could see EA bagging rollercoaster tycoon.
You could seriously micro/monetize the absolute b'jesus out of it.

Dearly love a new rtc, but sadly thats what it would be... thankfully the original is a timeless classic:)

I would like to see what ubisoft could do with 1 of these titles as IMHO recent line up of game have been excellent and the new watch dogs looks epic. Out of the 3 i would want Test Drive to be revived as TDU1 is up there as one of my favourite gaming experiences ever, RCT would be close behind though.

TDU could be EPIC as a true MMO. Instead of the instanced worlds with a pathetic number of players.

The shambles of TDU2 is a prime example of why Atari went **** up.

I would pay a monthly sub for a true MMO TDU experience.

Players patrolling as police, setting up speedtraps for example. So speeding had an element of risk and could end up with a huge chase with the police players calling for backup from other players etc.

I would not mind fuel usage as well with petrol stations :)

After TDU2, the franchise is worth about 15p at a push.

Very much agree with what you've said, I must have spent over 1000 hours in Test Drive Unlimited 1 back in the day. Every road driven, all cars etc legitimately obtained. It's the most usage my G25 has ever got over the last 5 years. TDU2 was a shambles and the downgrade in forcefeedback/car feel was the killer for me, it's simply not as fun to play with the wheel - Blame console gamers for that.

Really hope someone competent picks it up and makes it what Eden clearly envisaged but was technically incapable of achieving.
