Aten KVM switch - I've disabled Keyboard Emulation and now cannot get back into HSM Mode to enable it again (or do anything)

On my Aten KVM, to get into HSM mode you hold NumLock and press '-'. Pressing 'N' then disabled keyboard emulation.

Seems this also then stops you getting back into HSM mode to do any further config of the KVM... Huh?

How are you supposed to do anything, even just turning back on that Keyboard Emulation mode?

Alas, seemingly once you turn off Keyboard Emulation, the keys to enter the config mode (HSM) no longer work, so there's then no way to re-enabled Keyboard Emulation, or infact do any of the config operators. Bizarre!

Have you tried the alternative HSM invocation keys in case you've accidentally changed it?

Some Aten KVMs you can reset via a jumper inside, others there is a power on sequence but annoyingly it isn't documented and ages since I did it last so can't remember.

Yeh, tried the alternative key sequence too... I'll keep trying.

I'm in the process of moving from a CS1782A DVI (the one I'm trying to change the config with) to a new CS1822 HDMI one. My nightmare is I have to disable keyboard emulation on the new CS1822 too - as I have an Corsair RGB Keyboard - and it's a one way trip on that one too.

Just registered to reply to this for anyone who finds this Googling in future - what worked for me was swapping the mouse and keyboard USB connections at the back. My keyboard is now plugged into the mouse port and vice versa. Not sure quite how but doing that re-enabled emulation for both and I can get back into HSM again.

I wonder if it only applies the emulation-off setting to a specific keyboard and when you plug something new in it resets back to default (emulation on).

BTW, one problem I found with the dedicate mouse port was it had a VERY slow polling rate (seemed to affect gaming possibly?). In the end I put the mouse in the front general USB port on the KVM which offered a much faster polling rate.

I actually plugged my keyboard in a general USB slot too on the KVM else the iCue features for my Corsair RGB keyboard don't work.

So I have nothing plugged into the dedicated keyboard/mouse USB ports.

Yeah I've noticed a bit of a delay in the mouse when it's on emulation mode, and the dedicated apps (for my MS keyboard and Logitech mouse) only work when emulation is off - so I might just keep it that way (remembering my switch them around hack if I ever need it).

I've been tempted to use the general USB port so I can switch keyboard and mouse without switching monitor - I was thinking that would be a good way to quickly switch to a laptop whose single screen I could see anyway, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth to use it that way in my case.

So you've disabled hotkeys (HSM) etc?

In my case I've just left it on, but I'm just using the two regular USB ports for the keyboard and mouse, not the dedicated ones. I just use the buttons on the front of the KVM to switch input.

PS: Shame there's not just a pair of physical switches on the rear to turn on/off the hotkey behaviour for the keyboard and mouse USB ports.

Yeah I turned off emulation which turns off hotkeys. For some reason it's doing that for both keyboard and mouse and I'm only doing the key combo to turn it off for the mouse. Double tapping the mouse scroll button is an alright way to switch I guess but for keyboard by the time I hit [Scrl]-[Scrl]-1-[Enter] I might as as well have reached over and used the physical buttons.

I agree on the physical switch - I also reckon it's lacking a reset button, the only way I could find to do that was back in HSM mode.

Is there any suggestion the USB performance (speed) for a keyboard and mouse is worse through the CS1822 KVM than direct from the PC directly? From the KVM's non emulation USB ports or if emulation is turned off for the dedicated mouse/keyboard ports?

Is there any suggestion monitor response is compromised?

I don't think so although I'm far from an expert in KVMs. Maybe in emulated mode there'd be a delay but I gather non-emulated adds almost nothing.

OTOH I'm occasionally finding my mouse and keyboard get into a funk (mouse moves choppy and slow and keyboard skips and/or repeats characters) so there must be something happening inside it.
